General Summary :
This position is responsible for leading comprehensive and integrated communications strategies to promote Unum Group and its business entities / brands, protect its reputation, deliver measurable business results, and inspire key audiences to act by delivering the right message at the right time in the right way, whether internal or external to Unum Group.
This leader must be able to understand and analyze the needs of the enterprise and business operations, translate those needs into communications objectives and ensure these objectives are met effectively with appropriate campaigns and resources.
The role is accountable for effectively managing and developing a team of communication professionals. A high degree of leadership, strategic planning and business acumen are required, along with the ability to manage multiple initiatives and build strong relationships and organizational credibility.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the development and implementation of communications strategies (internal and external) to deliver Unum Group’s business goals, as aligned to assigned scope (e.
g., department, subject matter, channel, project)
- Partner closely with Chief Communications Officer and other senior leaders to provide strategic communications counsel
- Lead development of executive communications and optimal communications positioning for business areas and senior leaders, including support for media relations, issues and incident management, presentations, events, thought leadership and more
- Lead in the development of key communications messages and ensure adherence of employee communications to these messages
- Establish strong working partnerships across the Unum Group enterprise and ensure the Corporate Communications team is effectively supporting them in attaining their objectives.
- Establish clear goals and strategies for communications infrastructure and in partnership with People & Communications and technology partners, direct the design, launch, governance and management of new channels and technologies where needed
- Know and understand content strategy and key analytics and metrics to determine best use of different communications vehicles and ensure that Corporate Communications is creatively and effectively optimizing all content and media
- Lead the development of creative assets that support communications strategy and ensure optimization of content across paid, earned, shared, and owned channels
- Manage a communications organization and processes to ensure effective and efficient delivery of communication programs and the maintenance of a timely, relevant, and engaging communications portfolio
- Foster high-caliber, engaged team of communications experts and inclusive employee behaviors to deliver on goals
- Be well-informed on relevant communications trends and research, as well as stakeholder insights, to identify opportunities and recommend communications approaches
- May perform other duties as assigned
Job Specifications
- Requires bachelor’s degree and aggregate 15+ years of progressively responsible communications experience in agency or in-house environment
- Exhibits strong leadership skills, including the ability to effectively partner, problem-solve and influence others
- Proven ability to effectively execute communications plans and achieve strong results and to navigate independently through change and ambiguity
- Track record of attracting and developing high-potential and high-performing communications talent
- Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, as well as executive judgment
- Must have demonstrated, through previous positions, an ability to think strategically with an ability to develop robust communications solutions that meet enterprise and business operations outcomes
- Must have the ability to work successfully with senior leaders, including the chief executive officer, to provide communications counsel and support
- Proficiency cultivates strong, personal network across the organization
- Previous experience in the insurance or financial services industry is preferred, but not required

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.
$114,100.00-$205,400.00
Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.
5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
