Job Summary
The Manager Risk Mitigation is responsible for overseeing individuals who investigate, evaluate, report, and manage personal injury and property damage claims involving CN’s business assets.
Main Responsibilities
Monitoring
- Manage and direct activities of Risk Mitigation Officers
- Administer implemented policies and procedures for proficient claim file management
- Monitor the work provided to in-house and outside counsel
- Identify and proactively assess risks
Planning
- Conduct tri-annual evaluations of office and file claims
- Monitor injured employee medical status and return to work status
- Support the strategic planning of reducing and minimizing risk
- Compile, analyze, and communicate monthly and yearly reports
- Manage assigned budget within the directed conformity
Staff Management
- Provide Risk Mitigation Officers with proper training and development
- Participate in communications and Round Table Secessions with direct reports
- Engage internal an external stakeholder, fostering appropriate working relationships
- Develop top talent with a focus on succession planning
- Possess the leadership skills to direct and develop the Risk Mitigation Officers and support the Company’s purpose and values
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role is partially performed outdoors in various types of weather and environmental conditions.
The incumbent must be available to work night shift and weekends when necessary. The role requires being available on-call 24 / 7 to respond to critical incidences.
Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress. The role requires minimal travel in the United States (US).
The incumbent must pass pre-employment drug tests.
Requirements
Experience
Risk Mitigation
Minimum 5 years of experience
oExperience in claims investigation, reporting, evaluation, and negotiation
Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
Education / Certification / Designation
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, risk management, criminal justice, communications, or occupational health-related*
- Valid Driver’s License
- Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills / Knowledge
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
- Knowledge of Tort Law, including Federal Employer's Liability Act (FELA), Safety Appliance Act, and Boiler Inspection Act
- Knowledge of occupational medical terminology and treatment protocols*
- Knowledge of trial procedures and strategy*
- Knowledge of railroad operations, including familiarity with operating and safety rules*
