e. tenure-track) faculty position in the school of Professional and Continuing Education at The Evergreen State College starting in the 2025-26 academic year.
The Evergreen State College seeks a faculty member with advanced training and experience in applied geospatial science, physical geography and environmental science.
This faculty member will act as the lead faculty for an introductory level program. Depending on their area of expertise, they will also teach foundational and intermediate-level environmental studies courses which could include : environmental science, introduction to physical geography, atmospheric and climate science, or other environmental studies.
Faculty at Evergreen also have the opportunity to develop specialized courses and student-focused research projects in their area of interest.
Faculty are expected to offer curriculum developed independently or in collaboration with other faculty from a wide range of social science, physical science, arts, and humanities disciplines.
Some classes will be team-taught.
Candidates should demonstrate robust experience teaching quantitative literacy and GIS in concert with their area of expertise.
Interests in undergraduate education and interdisciplinary education will be given preference. Due to our campus’ interdisciplinary nature, faculty should be prepared to address broad social themes along with ongoing curriculum to explore transcendent pedagogical approaches and provide interdisciplinary offerings for students.

The curriculum combines theory with practice and is offered during evenings and weekends in multiple teaching modes. Accordingly, we seek highly collaborative colleagues who are interested in career-connected learning and creative online instruction for diverse learners.
Job Expectations The faculty member hired into this position will teach either 4-credit or 8-credit offerings in a combination adding up to 16 credits per 11-week quarter.
Faculty teach at a 25 : 1 student to faculty ratio. Faculty can also support capstone work including undergraduate research or internships and faculty-supported research (dependent on teaching workload).
Faculty will accordingly have a planned full-time workload equivalent to 25 full-time (16-credit) student FTE (for example : two 8-credit classes with 25 students each or other such combinations).
This position is approximately 90% teaching, 10% governance.
Courses and programs are offered online, in-person, or in low residency hybrid formats with both remote and in-person elements.
Most synchronous instruction takes place during evenings or weekend hours, with some flexibility to offer instruction in the day if there is demonstrated demand.
In the first year of the contract faculty will have the opportunity for partial release from teaching to help with the design and development of new certificates and curriculum in the school for Professional and Continuing education.
Faculty will be provided with opportunities to increase their skill in online curriculum development.
Evergreen uses written narrative evaluations in lieu of grades and faculty are generally responsible for writing evaluations and conducting in-person meetings with 25 students / quarter in each class.
Faculty are also responsible for advising students as they reflect on their learning process, develop a pathway of study, and formulate their own areas of concentration.

- Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Geology, Geography, Atmospheric Science, Earth Science or a closely related field with a GIS or remote sensing concentration.
- Ability to teach upper-division students in specified areas above
- Ability to teach lower-division (general education) GIS, Environmental Studies
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated skills in remote sensing and cross-platform analyses
- Experience supporting student research using alternative and emerging technologies and platforms (e.g., GoogleEarthEngine, R, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm for designing courses, especially interdisciplinary curriculum
- Experience teaching online
