Job Overview
This is a skilled heating and air conditioning work. An applicant for this position must hold a minimum of a Journeyman's License in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
The employee is responsible for ensuring that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment, pneumatic and digital controls, and related equipment are properly maintained and repaired.
Work includes three main areas : maintenance of RTU’s and packaged equipment, energy management systems, and minor chiller components.
The work is performed in accordance with standard practices of the trade and applicable codes and regulations.
Roles and Responsibilities

- Performs routine maintenance and repairs of commercial HVAC equipment; includes roof top units, VAV’s, fan coils, blower motors, dampers, split systems, circulating pumps, gas / oil furnaces, chillers, cooling towers, hydronic piping systems, and chillers
- Performs preventive maintenance inspection of mechanical systems and equipment, orders replacement parts and materials, coordinates installation schedule with customers.
- Maintains Refrigerant Control Logs in accordance with EPA Regulations and supervisor guidance; recovers refrigerant and charges equipment, orders replacement parts and materials, coordinates installation schedule with customers.
- May be assigned to lead a team of maintenance personnel to accomplish a maintenance project.
Qualifications
Below are the minimum qualifications for this job. Equivalent combinations of education and experience are also acceptable.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Completion of a mechanical (HVAC) trade apprenticeship
Experience
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Driver’s License; CDL desired
- Virginia Journeyman HVAC professional trade license required; Master HVAC desired; Master Gas Fitter professional trade license desired
- Universal CFC Refrigerant License required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of approved methods, practices, techniques, tools, and equipment used in replacing, repairing, and maintaining commercial air conditioning, compressors, chillers, cooling towers, terminal units.
- Knowledge of the hazards of the maintenance trades and safety precautions utilized to minimize risks
- Knowledge of the hazards of the HVAC trade and safety precautions utilized to minimize risks
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, to communicate effectively, and to work cooperatively with others
- Must be able to use information technology systems to receive work assignments and other communications

Essential Personnel
Employees who perform the responsibilities of this position for the Department of Support Services are considered essential personnel.
Essential personnel are designated employees who must report for work during a delay or emergency situations. A workplace emergency is an unforeseen situation that threatens the staff, pupils, or the public;
disrupts or shuts down business operations; or causes physical or environmental damage. Emergencies may be natural or manmade.
It is incumbent upon the supervisor to inform and confirm which essential personnel are required to work during emergency closings.
Notification and confirmation of the expectation of essential personnel to report to work, or maintain as-needed status, will be executed with as much advanced notice as possible via in-person communication or email.
