Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a supportive, forward thinking and innovative multi-disciplinary team including medical staff, Surgical Care Practitioners, Physician Associates and clinical Nurse Specialists who are committed to providing the highest standard of patient care within the Hepatobiliary (HPB) teams at the Freeman Hospital.

We have a full time post for Band 7 Nurse Practitioner / Physician Associate within the HPB team. We will consider a Band 6 Nurse Practitioner training post for a candidates with appropriate experience, candidates will progress to a Band 7 within 6 - 18 months once they have completed the clinical skills and assessment course.

Band 7 Salary £46,148 - £52,809

Band 6 Salary £37,338 - £44,962

Nurse Practitioner

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to perform a specific technological procedure / s endoscopy, ultrasound in a defined patient group and / or advanced patient assessment and clinical decision making in a broad patient group complex HPB patients

To deliver a quality of service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice :

  • To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care
  • Working as a nurse practitioner, provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need
  • Manage own caseload to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined parameters and training
  • Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others
  • Review and refer to appropriate person, AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team
  • Liaising with Patient Services Coordinator where necessary
  • Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward / departmental staff and / or out of hours team
  • Provide specialist education and training to departmental nursing staff, nursing and medical students
  • To provide support to the HPB team, rounds, clinics including rapid access clinics
  • To work alongside allied health professionals as a team. Physician associates, Surgical scrub practitioners

Physician Associate

  • The post holder will work under the supervision of the Medical Team and will be supported in developing those skills necessary to perform their role in providing high quality, patient centred service to patients attending the breast unit
  • The role will largely be based within Endoscopy Services initially undergoing training in endoscopic procedures. Ultimately to a point where the post holder will deliver their own diagnostic endoscopy caseload once training complete (in line with national guidance on endoscopy training)
  • The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team in the endoscopy units including nurse practitioners and within the policies and procedures of the unit and NUTH
  • The post holder will build on their skills in clerking, assessing and examining patients gained through their physician associate training, develop skills in lesion recognition in the gastrointestinal tract, interpretation and recommend appropriate managements / treatments (as governed by national guidelines).

Theywill be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients

It is expected that the Physician Associate will become involved in the activities of the Department including coordinating patients on treatment pathways, including 2WW cancer pathways, reviewing patients and providing subsequent management of cases in conjunction with the Clinical team.

Physician Associatesmay represent the department at local meetings as appropriate.

  • Physicians Associates will be expected to contribute to the units educational activities and instruct and educate patients in preventative healthcare
  • Physician Associates will be expected to contribute to the units governance system including the Endoscopy User Group meetings
  • Fully document all aspects of patient care and complete all required paperwork for legal and administrative purposes

Nurse Practitioner (Trainee)

  • To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing towards the delivery of a quality service matching clinical need to available resources within the focus of specialist nursing practice :
  • To ensure that the patient is the central focus of a streamlined patient journey ensuring optimal quality of care
  • Will provide a prompt response to calls from colleagues, prioritising importance and clinical need
  • Supports the clinical team to manage a defined caseload, activity to include assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols and training
  • Provide immediate care management of patient including communication of plan to patients and significant others
  • Review and refer to appropriate person, AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar or critical care outreach team
  • Liaises with Patient Services Coordinator. o Communicate within multidisciplinary team, ward / departmental staff and / or out of hours team
  • Contributes to specialist education and training to ward departmental staff, nursing and medical students

Meets All Nurse Practitioner Band 7 Criteria

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
  • Current NMC registration
  • Degree / Masters level study, or equivalent specialist study / experience o Nurse Practitioner Qualification or equivalent o Clinical Skills Course
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
  • Evidence of on-going continuous professional development
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
  • Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
  • Recent experience of extended clinical practice in a senior role underpinned by training and assessment venepuncture, cannulation skills and intravenous drug administration
  • Audit / research experience
  • Good IT skills
  • Able to work independently and across disciplines as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Effective organisation and time management skills
  • Current driving licence if relevant to role
  • Moving and handling patients and objects in line with Trust guidelines using appropriate aids

Desirable

  • Master's degree
  • Management experience / qualification
  • Has undertaken and completed Non-medical independent nurse prescribing course
  • Evidence of leading programme / programmes of education and / or training

Essential

  • BSc / BA degree in relevant health related subject
  • Post graduate diploma as a Physician Associate / Assistant (Master's Level equivalent).
  • Valid certification of Physician Associate National Exam
  • Membership of the Faculty of Physician Associates or equivalent for the USA
  • Good understanding of the competence and curriculum framework requirements for Physician Associates (UKIUBPAE)
  • NHS performance management processes (quality assurance, clinical audit, compliance and governance)
  • Developing and maintaining key relationships with wide network of people to support the development and integration of the role of Physician Associate within the Trust , for example, educational supervisors, mentors, Royal Colleges etc
  • Understanding of information governance including data protection and maintaining confidentiality
  • Demonstrable understanding of statutory and mandatory training requirements within the NHS
  • Understanding of individual and organisational learning needs to ensure appropriate methods and processes are designed and delivered to ensure an effective learning experience
  • High level of competence in clinical skills and practice obtained through practice
