Job Duties :
The Virginia Beach Juvenile Probation CHINS Unit is hiring a Juvenile Probation Officer to provide pre-disposition case management support to children before the VB Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on criminal or status offenses by ensuring children with mental health diagnoses, sexually re-active or aggressive behaviors, substance use and special education needs receive services or interventions needed to stabilize the youth in placement and promote a successful transition back into the community.
Duties will include interviewing clients to develop action plans, completing reports, making referrals, testifying in court, developing collaborative relationships with VBCPS, Child and Youth Services, Child Welfare, Adult Services, community counselors, non-profit agencies and other community partners.
Specific responsibilities will include :
- Providing case management for identified youth receiving collaborative restorative justice services.
- Representing the Court Service Unit on Family Assessment and Planning Team Meetings (FAPT) and VBCSP Truancy Prevention / Intervention Committees.
- Assisting the Court Service Unit in the recruitment, training, and supervision of interns.
- Conducting face to face assessments to determine risk level, needs, and strengths of juveniles involved in the juvenile justice system.
- Linking to services, resources, and supports identified in the assessment, case plan, and court order.
- Coordinating services and service planning with other state and city agencies, private providers, schools, and vocational programs and obtains documentation from other providers to ensure continuity of care.
- Monitoring progress, service delivery, physical and mental stability, and consumer satisfaction by providing a minimum of a monthly contact to all individuals on assigned caseload.
- Providing practical interventions and education to guide juveniles in problem solving strategies and to develop a supportive therapeutic relationship.
- Maintaining case documentation and data in compliance with agency guidelines and state regulations. Completing an accurate record of direct and juvenile related services provided on a daily basis.
- Making comprehensive case presentations to FAPT and Court and attends agency staff meetings, case review meetings, treatment team meetings, supervisory meetings, and trainings as required.
- Complying with regulations of HIPPA, mandated reporting of abuse and neglect, confidentiality, and other consumer rights.

Preferences :
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree related to social work, sociology, psychology, counseling, or criminal justice
Experience working with adolescents or adults and using effective interventions in three of the following areas : mental health diagnoses, substance use, special education needs and aggressive or sexually reactive youth
Demonstrated knowledge of the juvenile justice system, risk, need, and responsivity and effective interventions
Excellent oral and written communication and time management skills
Demonstrated critical thinking skills
Demonstrated ability to assess information from multiple sources and assist with the development of action plans to address needs, identify potential barriers to success and assist in creating strategic plans to minimize or remove the impact of barriers
Ability to be mobile in the community and participate in training offered throughout the Commonwealth
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with people from all socio-economic groups, races, sexual orientations and religions
Experience assessing needs and linking clients to appropriate services.
Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as reported by the Department of Motor Vehicles are required for persons using a personal or agency vehicle in the performance of their duties.
Preferred Qualifications : Master of Social Work or Sociology
