Overview of position : Summary of position’s responsibilities

General Description Reporting to the Dean of Business, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, the Associate Dean is the lead administrator for academic and administrative leadership within the Business and Technology department and, as such, is responsible for developing, coordinating, assessing, and administering all of the academic programs and activities within the department.

With the assistance and advice of the program coordinators, faculty and staff, the Associate Dean ensures the relevance and vitality of programs within the department;

develops departmental plans; encourages professional development opportunities for faculty and staff and champions teaching excellence.

The Associate Dean with consultation with the Dean has the responsibility and authority to oversee key departmental functioning including resource allocation, personnel, and educational and scholarly objectives of the programs and curricula in the department.

Within these capacities, the position is responsible for collaborating with appropriate faculty in the preparation of program and departmental budgets;

supervising and coordinating personnel management matters, determining faculty load assignments, and organizing and supervising program and departmental development efforts.

Responsibilities / Duties An (Associate Dean) is responsible for :

1. Leadership Providing academic, administrative, and institutional leadership within the College and division. Provides departmental leadership and support for teaching excellence and student success by promoting broad-based input, pursuing college-wide collaborations, and utilizing creative and innovative methods to solve problems.

Provides leadership in developing, evaluating, and maintaining curricula and programs that respond to community needs, prepare students for success that meet the stated requirements of Code Of Maryland Regulation (COMAR), Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), and where appropriate, other accrediting bodies such as Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Provide fiscal leadership for the department including budget development and management, grant writing and implementation, Computer Labs, learning spaces, student surveys for ACBSP, course and program level Student Learning Outcomes Assessment, Program Review and Evaluation, and facilities oversight.

Develops departmental plans and budgets with input from faculty and staff; facilitates the development of programs, projects and initiatives in support of the College’s Strategic Plan, Academic Master Plan and other college interests.

Remains abreast of national research, trends, issues and initiatives impacting the discipline / programs within the department and teaching and learning.

2. Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment Coordinate and lead the implementation of curriculum analysis and review; define educational goals, objectives, and assessment methodologies, and assessment data in conjunction with faculty.

Develops a schedule of classes in consultation with the Dean and Vice President that is responsive to student and college needs.

Advocate and support the use of technology and alternative delivery methods such as asynchronous, online and hybrid classes, learning communities, etc.

Develops and implements strategies that support recruitment, retention, program completion, job placement and transfer opportunities for students;

monitors program data, enrollment trends and devise appropriate strategies as needed to increase enrollment in all programs.

Oversees textbook review and selection process, updates textbook inventory and orders textbook for area of responsibility.

3. College Relations Collaborates with local, state, regional and national educational and community agencies and organizations to develop partnerships, alliances and strategies that promote student success and advance the mission of the college.

Engages with departmental program advisory councils and boards.

4. Administration and Management Facilitate department meetings and participate on college committees. Recommend faculty and staff for employment and advise the Dean of vacancies and projected staffing needs;

supervise and evaluate personnel including making recommendations to the Dean for recognition of faculty, reclassification of staff, disciplinary actions and / or termination of employment.

Coordinates and oversees the assignment of mentors to new faculty while serving as mentor to all faculty and staff relative to job performance and professional development.

Conducts the annual performance evaluation for each faculty member, as well as workload plans. Supervises department office personnel.

Conducts meetings with faculty to review / approve departmental plans, delivery of services, resolve faculty and student issues, and ensure faculty support and attainment of the departmental and individual faculty goals. Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications :

  • An earned Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline taught in the department; (Accounting, Business, Computer Information Systems, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Construction Supervision, Cyber Security and Assurance, Fashion Design, and Office Administration)
  • Two years’ experience in related discipline as a chair or associate dean in higher education.
  • Minimum of three years as full-time faculty with demonstrated excellence in post-secondary teaching experience (teaching experience in a community college strongly preferred).

Doctorate in a discipline taught within the department or related field (Accounting, Business, Computer Information Systems, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Construction Supervision, Cyber Security and Assurance, Fashion Design, and Office Administration)
