Job Summary :

  • The Director of Operations leads the Museum Store, Events, and Facilities units of the Natural History Museum of Utah; coordinates contracts and serves as liaison for the Museum Café, security, and custodial services;
  • works collaboratively with other departments to create and implement Museum-wide strategies for maximizing the quality of visitor experience;
  • contributes to and grows the Museum’s earned revenue enterprise; manages a departmental budget of personnel and non-personnel expenses;

participates in the development of long-range facility and grounds strategies for the Museum, and serves as project manager for facilities-related initiatives.

Responsibilities :

  • Participates as a member of the Museum’s senior leadership team and works with the Board of Advisors in setting strategic direction for the Museum.
  • Works closely with Director of Administration to forecast store and event revenues, goals for partner and internal events, and Operations Department staffing and budget needs.
  • Manages staff, including ongoing performance evaluation, recruitment and retention, and professional development opportunities.
  • Serves as project manager for long-range, large-scale facilities projects, responsible for project coordination, communication, scheduling, and budget management.
  • Manages, supports, and works with earned revenue (Museum Store and Events) managers by collaboratively setting long and short-term financial goals and data analysis to ensure fiscally successful enterprises that best represent the Museum brand.
  • Manages, supports, and works with NHMU Events, other NHMU units, and community partner organizations to ensure successful event logistics for NHMU programs, special events, and sponsored partner programs.
  • Manages, supports, and works with NHMU Facilities and Grounds manager and University of Utah colleagues to ensure short- and long-term stewardship of the Museum’s capital assets.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Board of Advisors’ Business & Finance Committee to maximize the earned revenue performance of the Museum and explore entrepreneurial opportunities for the Museum.
  • Manages and supports on-campus and off-campus contractor services : Security, Museum Café, and Custodial services.
  • Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships and participates in University- and Museum-wide committees.
  • Serves as primary safety officer, coordinating the Museum’s Emergency Planning Committee (EPC) and acting as the primary liaison to the University’s public safety functions.
  • Coordinates Manager on Duty (MOD) training and communication.

Minimum Qualifications :

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience);

plus eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.

Master’s degree in Business Administration, or related area preferred.

Preferences :

MBA or related graduate degree and retail management experience preferred. Experience with facilities management and capital expansion projects is a plus.
