Summary :

Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and oversees the activities of the Ak-Chin Indian Community Youth Council.

Minimum Qualifications :

Associates Degree is preferred, with at least two years experience working with youth or an equivalent combination of education or experience will substitute for the required experience.

Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must be able to pass an extensive background check.

Examples of Duties :

  • Creates opportunities for Ak-Chin youth to strengthen and develop leadership skills, work on community service projects and develop culturally relevant skills / attitudes that will prepare youth to become the next generation of leaders for the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  • Serves as a positive role model to the Youth Council and the youth of the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  • Promotes and encourages positive behaviors in youth involved in the program and nurtures active citizenship skills.
  • Conducts research; compiles materials; and prepares lessons related to Ak-Chin history, culture and language.
  • Plans Youth Council activities, programs, and projects in coordination with Community departments, other tribes and their Youth Councils, and outside local and national agencies and organizations.
  • Assesses the needs of Ak-Chin youth by actively soliciting their ideas and recognizing their talents.
  • Creates, maintains and updates a master calendar of scheduled activities for the Youth Council.
  • Engages in Community Outreach in order to stimulate program participation and promote Youth Council sponsored events to students of the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
  • Displays a high level of commitment and enthusiasm for activities.
  • Serves as a chaperone and maintains control of Youth Council members during instructional programs, leadership events, meetings and special events both in and out of state.
  • Communicates and provides regular feedback to youth on behavior and conducts routine discipline when needed.
  • Transports youth to and from activities utilizing tribal vehicle.
  • Maintains positive relationships with students and parents / guardians.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with local, state and national tribal youth council leadership organizations in order to share ideas and keep informed on "Common Practices".
  • Develops and recommends for the Council's approval, Youth Council policies and procedures.
  • Prepares, submits for approval and monitors Youth Council program budget.
  • Creates and submits proposals for Youth Council sponsored events, attendance at conferences / training or travel desired.
  • Provides quarterly status reports to both the Community Council and the Community Operations Manager on the activities of the Youth Council.
  • Writes reports and maintains attendance records and files.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Other Requirements :

  • Knowledge of the Ak-Chin Indian Community Government and its operations.
  • Knowledge of the Ak-Chin Indian Community history, culture and traditions.
  • Knowledge of the economic, educational, health and social problems of today's youth.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Youth Council members and their parents, other Community departments, and outside local and national agencies and organizations.
  • Ability to effectively plan and coordinate work of others.
  • Ability to plan, develop and oversee youth-oriented programs.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing computer software, such as Word and Excel.
  • Ability to express ideas in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.

Classification Status :

This is a non-exempt position.
