SUMMARY Participates in a process of instruction and activity to perform electroencephalography (EEG) and long-term monitoring (LTM) via scalp and intracranial electrodes on adult and pediatric patients of all Neurophysiology Programs including Epilepsy Surgery and Pediatric Monitoring Programs.

Prepares equipment and supplies for such procedures. Aids advanced neurophysiology staff, and providers in performing neurodiagnostic and similar studies as required.

Provides and supports real-time neurotelemetry, monitoring patients undergoing testing within the critical care EEG (CCEEG) LTM program across YNHHS, including the adult and pediatric epilepsy monitoring units (EMUs).

Alerts appropriate care team for STAT response to patient room for all witnessed seizures and events in question with a focus on patient safety, reducing risk of falls and capturing events on video.

Monitors and annotates the recording within neurodiagnostic system, and reports on electrographic features and clinical manifestations noted in the video recording.

Performs troubleshooting and notifications requiring repair and maintenance of equipment. Provides communication and relays to lead technologist as necessary regarding critical findings to be conveyed to the clinical team.

Notifies NeuroDTS / biomedical device integration (BMDI) team concerning through designated protocols concerning repair, maintenance, and technological responsibilities.

Thus, ensuring and adhering to quality standards as set forth in national standards, including the American Clinical Neurophysiology (ACNS) guidelines.

Responsibilities

Performs duties associated with monitoring patients being evaluated during Continuous Audio Visual EEG Recording. Provides assistance to physicians performing these and similar studies as required.

Prepares the patient and supplies prior to the process of Continuous Audio Visual EEG Monitoring , via scalp and / or intracranial electrodes.

Applies and connects scalp electrodes according to the International 10-20 system of electrode placement as approved by the American Board of Registered Technologists .

1 3. Applies collodion electrodes adhering to unit standards.

Assists the Neurology Epilepsy Fellow and Senior EEG technicians during the initiation of intracranial recording

Responsible for routine maintenance of recording equipment in the unit Continuous Audio Visual EEG and patient's areas.

1 6. Monitors supply use and reports on inventory.

1 7. Assists with the storage of patient data according to established protocols.

1 8. Edits identified electrographic events, preparing edited and clipped files for physician review. Follows established safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties to ensure a safe environment.

Consistently demonstrates a complete knowledge of body mechanics as evidenced by no injuries sustained as a result of improper body mechanics in this evaluation period.

2 1. Demonstrates a concern for cleanliness of self and work area on a daily basis and practices proper infection control techniques as outlined in Universal Precautions with no more than four (4) variances per year or one (1) variance per quarter, as observed by supervisor.

2 2. Keeps equipment in clean operating condition daily and performs maintenance and minor repairs of laboratory equipment and reports the need for major repairs as soon as possible as observed by supervisor.

2 3. Provides appropriate patient care during seizure (this would involve activating an event; notifying responsible caregiver and providing care by turning patient's head to one side to prevent aspiration).

Stays with patient until caregiver responds.

2 4. Assists in the cleaning and organizing of the unit on own initiative. This is done daily as observed by supervisor

Qualifications

EDUCATION (number of years and type required to perform the position duties) :

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Associate degree or higher is preferred or graduate from or enrollment in a CAAHEP-accredited neurodiagnostic program.

Students enrolled in or graduates of the YNHH School of Clinical Neurophysiology (SOCN) are preferred hires.

EXPERIENCE (number of years and type required to meet an acceptable level of performance) :

Three to four years of experience in a patient care function within a hospital or clinical setting, such as polysomnography (PSG), EMT, PCA, CNA, or similar position.

SPECIAL SKILLS :

Intermediate computer skills and familiarity with troubleshooting network connectivity. Self-directed and collaborates well within a team.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and professionally interact across platforms and roles in multidisciplinary teams.

Knowledge of and familiarity in clinical environments.

ACCOUNTABILITY (how this position is held accountable for such as goals achievement, budget adherence, or other areas of accountability) :

Participates in a variety of routine and specialized monitoring protocols across populations including pediatric adult and across ambulatory, inpatient, and critical care environments.

Assists in the maintenance of neurodiagnostic / polysomnographic equipment. Supports providers, advanced practice professionals, neurophysiologists, and advanced specialist roles with data acquisition, processing, and analysis for complex assessment, review, and interpretation.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION :

National board certification in EEG (REEGT) by ABRET-Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation Board or registered polysomnographic technologist (RPSGT) by BRPT (Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists) must be achieved within 2-years of hire, an essential requirement to advance to the Neurophysiology Technologist II position

Additional Information

Previous expereince obtaining EEGs strongly preferred, degree in Neurobiology or Neuroscience preferred.
