Job Description
MANAGING AND TRAINING ATTORNEY The Indigent Defense Commission and Utah Office of Indigent Defense Services is seeking a Managing and Training Attorney to administer the Aggravated Murder Defense and Indigent Inmate (Gunnison) programs.
Additionally, the individual will develop, coordinate, and promote the IDC’s training program. This position will report directly to the Executive Director. Principal Duties
Manage Aggravated Murder Defense Fund : Review defense attorney applications for inclusion on the IDC’s Aggravated Murder Defense panel.
Assign new cases to attorneys on the panel. Communicate regularly with attorneys on the panel to address any issues or concerns with their cases.
Address client complaints. Review requests for defense resources for reasonableness.
Manage Indigent Inmate Fund : Assign cases to defense attorneys on the Indigent Inmate Defense panel. Communicate regularly with the attorneys on the panel to address any issues or concerns with their cases.
Address client complaints. Review invoices for payment.
Administer the IDC’s training program : Identify topics for monthly CLE’s, to include Adult Criminal, Youth Defense, and Parental-Defense themes.
Locate and recruit subject-matter experts to present. Promote upcoming CLE’s to public defenders state-wide. Coordinate with Utah State Board of Continuing Legal Education for approval of CLE credit.
Organize and conduct in-person, small group training sessions in rural areas of the state. Assist as needed with partner agencies with conferences.
Any other duties as determined by the Executive Director.
The Ideal Candidate
- Rule-8 Certified (Mandatory Requirement)
- Minimum 10 years experience in criminal defense
- Experience in developing and coordinating training programs.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize own tasks, and problem solve in a results-driven team-oriented environment.
- Strong verbal and written communications skills.

The Commission collaborates with the state, local governments, indigent defense providers, and other stakeholders to :
- provide guidance and standards for systems to ensure and oversee local defense services;
- gather and report information about local indigent defense services;
- award state funding to local governments to improve local indigent defense services;
- encourage and aid in the regionalization of indigent defense services throughout the state; and
- expand continuing legal education opportunities for indigent defense attorneys.
