Job Summary

Responsible for developing and implementing the Institute Radiation Safety Program and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and standards and to ensure the safety of users of radioactive materials, x-ray producing devices, Class 3B and 4 lasers and additional non-ionizing radiation devices.

Accountable for the Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License issued from GA DNR. Technical expert on campus for radiological research projects and provide support to the Institute Radiation Safety Committee.

Works under the supervision of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). This position will interact on a consistent basis with : Director of EHS, faculty, staff, students, various levels of management.

This position will typically advise and counsel : faculty, staff and students. This position will supervise : Associate Radiation Safety Officer (Laser Safety Officer), Senior Health Physicist, Health Physicist, Administrative support.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -

Implement Radiation Safety program for GT Broad Scope License to include Radiation Safety Meetings.

Job Duty 2 -

Manage and implement X-ray Safety Program and Laser Safety Program. Evaluate or design shielding plans for x-ray rooms and high activity source rooms, and submit to state for review and approval.

Inspect the shielding once installed, prepare inspection documentation and submit to state agency.

Job Duty 3 -

Manage Health Physics Support for Radiological Science and Engineering Lab, including consultation on projects working with high activity sources projects, procedure review, and Radiation Work Permit review.

Includes security and access control.

Job Duty 4 -

Perform radioactive material contamination surveys, dose rate surveys, lab closeout surveys. Review and assess all documentation.

Manage the radioactive waste handling program in include decay in storage and offsite shipping.

Job Duty 5 -

Manage the dosimetry program, review reports, initiate and conduct investigations as necessary.

Job Duty 6 -

Respond to radiological incidents and accidents, mitigate hazards and provide decontamination services. Provide detailed written reports to determine root causes, appropriate corrective actions and correspondence with regulatory authorities.

Job Duty 7 -

Define radiation safety requirements to ensure occupational exposures fall within GT ALARA policy and to ensure public dose limits are not exceeded.

Provide radiological safety and health consultation to faculty, staff, and students across the Institute. Develop and provide new safety programs to meet the dynamic research needs of the Institute.

Job Duty 8 -

Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Master's Degree in Health Physics or Radiological Health or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience

Ten years of job related experience

American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification

Certified in Health Physics by American Board of Health Physics.

Must be able to pass background investigation as required in 10 CFR 37.25.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a solid technical knowledge and expertise in radiation safety. Must have technical expertise to ensure license requirements are met.

Advanced knowledge of Health Physics and experience with developing and implementing Radiation Safety Programs in higher education environment.

Extensive knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations pertaining to use of radioactive materials, x-ray producing devise, Class 3B and 4 lasers, and other non-ionizing radiation.

Experience implementing NRC security requirements. Must be skilled in contamination control and handling of RAM. Must have experience with inspections of X-Ray producing devices, conducting lab surveys and source leak tests;

use of radiation detection instrumentation; in management and handling of radioactive waste and in emergency response to radiological emergencies and incidents.

Must be effective in communicating safety program requirement to all levels of the Institute and in development new programs as necessary.
