Summary Statement
The Director of Patient Registration provides leadership, motivation, and guidance to
the designated Patient Access areas, works with Management Team to set goals for the
Department, and creates action plans to achieve these goals.
Essential Functions
1. Responsible for successfully meeting performance goals established for current
departments.
2. Works with Managers, Supervisors and staff to develop goals for Patient
Registration.
3. Develops subordinates through identification of goals and participation in the
operations of Patient Registration and its interfaces with other departments.
4. Responsible for reviewing performance appraisals of employees and writing those of
the management team.
5. Produces and keeps required Departmental Records (attendance and counseling
sheets) on each manager and supervisor and assures that managers and
supervisors keep required Departmental Records on each employee.
6. Knowledgeable of JCAHO standards and assures that the Department meet those
standards.
7. Interacts on as needed basis with the other Atrium departments.
8. Promotes a positive hospital image to patients, visitors, and physicians by adhering
to the Atrium core values of Caring, Commitment, Integrity and Teamwork
Marginal Functions
1. Able to perform various functions as needed including registration, verification,
certification, and data entry.
2. Files various reports.
3. Processes paperwork.
Physical Requirements
Employee must be able to occasionally lift 20-50 pounds and bend and stretch required
for information gathering from various filing systems. Travel is required within the
Patient Registration Departments and within the hospital facilities.
Work is performed in open offices with some partitioned areas. Some work is performed
at desk using telephone and computer entry. Work is subject to heavy volume and
frequent interruptions either by phone or by other employees. Each employee has the
responsibility to work in a safe manner.
Education, Training and Experience
Degree : High School Diploma or equivalent required
Bachelor's Degree required
Three to five years of progressive supervisory experience in the health care field is
required. Experience in Patient Registration is required. Experience in insurance
verification, insurance billing and follow-up, and certification (all being hospital-based) is
preferred. Experience in Acute Care and Psychiatric Facilities preferred.
Employee must be knowledgeable regarding current government and state regulations
including Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare regulations) and able to modify procedures
accordingly in order to maintain compliance. Employee must also be knowledgeable of
the differing applications of these regulations in each facility.
Must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development and
possess the ability to respond to age specific issues and data reflective of the patient’s
status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the
following age groups : Neonate, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Older Adult
Protected Health Information
Employee will limit access to Protected Health Information (PHI) so that only the
information reasonably necessary to do the job is available.
Will share information only on a need to know basis for work purposes and will dispose
of PHI using appropriate method.
Access to verbal, written and electronic PHI for this job has been determined based on
job level and job responsibility with the organization. Computerized access to PHI for
this job has been determined as described above and is controlled via user ID and
password.
Machines Tools and Equipment
Must be knowledge of current office environment, computer hardware and applications.
