DESCRIPTION

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to creating and promoting public health innovations to advance equity, justice, and wellbeing for all.

The School focuses on health, diversity, inclusion, and social equity in everythingwe do. We believe this starts in the workplace, where we actively strive to ensure a sense of belonging for everyone and honor the idea that through our differences, we are better together.

In working to fulfill that vision, we are comprised of more than 125 primary appointed facultyand academics, 200 staff members, and 25 secondary appointed faculty and provide mentorship and instruction to 750+ BSPH undergraduate major students and 225+ postgraduate students across six degree programs as well as a clinical residency.

We conduct research and instruction in public health disciplines such as Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Climate & Environmental Health, Community Health Services & Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Behavior, Health Equity & Justice, Health Policy, Public Mental Health & Substance Use, and Technology & Precision Health, totaling $255M in grants and contracts and housing five research servicecores.

We engage in research and teaching collaborations across the University and the community at-large. Partnerships with the community and with health agencies are fundamental to the School.

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Business Officer (ABO) / Director of Finance & Operations, the incumbent is responsible for fiscal operations support to a diverse portfolio that may include general, gift, self-supporting, education program funds and the post award research administration for federal, state, industry, non-profit contacts and grants.

Serves as resource for the fiscal core as financial journal requests are made to support all missions. Responsible for the review and maintenance of financial encumbrances in the general ledger;

processing financial journals; and default activity reporting and corrections.

Where feasible, designs and implements financial systems to enhance performance and outcomes. Performs complex financial analysis and provides recommendations regarding the most efficient use of resources.

Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships with internal and external contacts. Provides post award support to Principal Investigators engaged in research activities and / or clinical trials.

Assist with other projects and miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures;

resolves a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Contacts are both internal and external to the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Seven (7) years of related experience, education / training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus three (3) years of related experience / training.

Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.

Ability to independently gather required information to organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.

Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.

Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

Strong Excel skills including pivots, filtering, and advanced formulae.

Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills;

and attention to detail. Proven ability using organizational skills to multi-task in a high volume environment.

Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.

Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.

Proven efficiency and accuracy in the preparation of grant budgets of all types.

Ability to manage significant volume of transactions. Skill in prioritizing a high volume workload to ensure priorities and other deadlines are met.

Ability to maintain flexibility to redirect efforts when priorities change. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments, managing both complicated long-range projects as well as short-term / immediate tasks, evaluate workload and resources, problem-solve.

Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.

Must be trustworthy and ethical and exhibit a high degree of integrity.

Demonstrated extramural research proposal preparation with emphasis on National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other Health Sciences related funders.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with UCSD online and web-based accounting systems.

Five (5) or more years of relevant experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $77,000 - $139,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $36.88 - $66.67

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
