Rutgers, the state University of New Jersey, is seeking a Genetic Counselor for the department of Pediatrics at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The Pediatric Medical Genetics Counselor provides clinical Pediatric and Adult genetic counseling services, under physician supervision when needed, for families and / or pregnancies at risk or suspected of having a genetic condition.
Additional responsibilities include delegation, direction, and supervision of the activities genetic counseling students.

Among the key duties of this position are the following :
- Provides genetic counseling evaluation and follow-up as part of a team in the Pediatric Medical Genetic Division at the Rutgers Health, Child Health Institute of New Jersey and The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
- Participates in pediatric genetic clinic and in-patient service.
- Collects family history and clinical information.
- Informs patient of risks, appropriate genetic testing.
- Obtains precertification for genetic testing.
- Prepares detailed reports for patients and physicians.
- Provides pre and post-test genetic counseling and support.
Position Status Full Time Hours Per Week Daily Work Shift Day Work Arrangement Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.
3.22 or the applicable provisions of relevant collective negotiations agreements, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

Masters’ Degree in Human Genetics / Genetic Counseling or its equivalent required within six (6) months of hire.
Certifications / Licenses
- Documentation of training in genetic counseling techniques and experience in genetic counseling at a site accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics (AMBG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (AMGC).
- Board Certified or Board Eligible Genetic Counselor American Board of Genetic Counseling (AMGC).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications
- Preference will be given to applicants who are board certified or eligible for board certification.
- Familiarity with the medical and research community in genetics as well as appropriate community resources pertaining to genetic family studies and new technologies in diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders.
Equipment Utilized Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Physical Demands : Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to 25 pounds.
- Work Environment : Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1 / 3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment;
some potential exposure (less than 1 / 3 of the time) to hazardous waste.
