Job Description :

Subject to the supervision of the Senior Director / Chief of Police. The Associate Director / Deputy Chief is responsible for the immediate supervision and control of all sworn and non-sworn members under his / her command and is responsible for their efficiency and effectiveness as a member of the department.

He / she is also responsible for ensuring compliance with the Public Safety Department's rules, regulations, policies, procedures, general orders, special orders, directives and appropriate statutes and law by subordinates under his / her command.

He / she also performs various functions relating to either administration or operation of the department as directed by the Senior Director / Chief of Police.

The Associate Director / Deputy Chief, as with all members of the sworn force, works in partnership with the Berklee community to maintain law and order, protect students, staff and visitors.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS :

Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, law enforcement or a related field. (Master's Degree preferred)

Graduate of an advanced Police Executive Development Program, i.e. Southern Police Institute (SPI), the F.B.I. National Academy (NA), Police Executive Research Forum - Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) or other equivalent program of study.

Must have obtained their Massachusetts POST certification by having completed a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer Academy and / or obtained a permanent exemption from the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) that has been approved and accepted by the Massachusetts State Police.

Police experience at the federal, state, municipal, or campus police level.

Successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation.

Successfully complete a pre-employment medical exam and psychological evaluation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Assists with management and oversight of day-to-day oprations of the police patrol force.

Develops and implements policies, subject to approval of the Senior Director / Chief of Police, to safeguard college personnel and property.

Monitors department compliance with applicable college policies and department procedures.

Promotes community policing initiatives on an ongoing basis to develop a positive working relationship with the community.

Coordinates training of all department personnel including, but not limited to mandatory in-service training required for sworn personnel.

Works closely with other departments on campus exchanging and sharing information critical to maintaining the safety and security of students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Maintains a positive working relationship with local, state, federal and campus law enforcement agencies. Share and exchange information relative to security issues, crime trends, investigations and joint training opportunities.

Maintains professional training standards and certifications.

Conducts training with various departments within the college.

Manages and coordinates all investigations or complaints brought to the attention of the Public Safety Department with internal departments such as : Student Affairs, Residence Life, The Counseling Center and others as appropriate.

Ensures compliance with The Jeanne Clery Discloser of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or Clery Act.

Ensures all incidents reported to Public Safety are investigated thoroughly and proper notifications are made within the Berklee community.

Contributes to Clery Act compliance by classifying offenses, maintaining accurate records of reported crimes and ensuring that proper, timely warnings and advisories have been issued as appropriate.

Oversees the analysis of crime trends on campus and develops patrol and investigative strategies accordingly.

Shall assist the Senior Director / Chief of Police with all internal affairs investigations.

Coordinates the presentation of all crime prevention materials and programs to the Berklee community.

Is responsible to ensure that proper dissemination of Public Safety records to other internal campus departments and external constituents is prompt, complete and legal.

Shall assist the Senior Director / Chief of Police as required or directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

Possess 5-7 years of police command experience at the rank of Lieutenant or higher.

Must be able to meet the requirements to obtain Massachusetts Special State Police Powers Chapter 22, Section 63.

Must possess a Class A Large Capacity Unrestricted License to Carry Firearms (M.G.L. c.140 sec.131).

Experience and knowledgeable in Incident Command and Emergency Preparedness.

Possess a thorough understanding of the Accreditation process through the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission.

Police Computer Operator (LEAPS) certification will be required.

Excellent oral, written communication and supervisory skills.

Ability to operate effectively in stressful and emergency situations.

Knowledge of administrative procedures, budget preparation and management practices, and supervisory practices and procedures.

Knowledge of law enforcement best practices and procedures and applicable laws, rules and regulations, and the skills to apply them.

Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.

Computer proficiency and thorough knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.).

Demonstrated capacity to develop and foster effective working relationships with individuals and organizations reflecting a broad range of identities, perspectives and experiences.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Will oversee Police Operations and Campus Safety Liaison Program.
