Summary :

This position meets the minimum CLIA qualifications of aLaboratory General Supervisor, and under the direction of theLaboratory Director and / or Laboratory Manager, coordinates andmanages the day-to-day operations of their specific section(s) andshift(s).

The Laboratory Supervisor serves in an administrativerole with direct reports, and functions in an exempt pay status. Inconjunction with the Laboratory Director and / or Laboratory Manager,this position develops and implements new procedures,instrumentation, quality control, and reagent use.

This position isalso responsible for the development and maintenance of policiesand procedures that meet the standards of regulatory agencies andimplements service quality improvements.

The Laboratory Supervisorensures all personnel are held accountable through ongoingpersonnel performance reviews and assists in the orientation anddevelopment of personnel competencies for their section(s).

Responsibilities :

  • Meets expectations of the applicableOneCHRISTUS Competencies : Leader of Self, Leader of Others, orLeader of Leaders.
  • Is responsible forproviding day-to-day supervision of high, moderate, and waivedcomplexity test performance by laboratory testingpersonnel.
  • Must be accessible to addresstechnical problems via on-site, telephone, or electronicconsultation with testing personnel at any time that testing isperformed in accordance with policies and procedures established bythe laboratory Medical Director.
  • Ensurescompliance with all policies, procedures, and standards aspromulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and otherregulatory entities such as CLIA, TJC, CAP, AABB,etc.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates the workactivities of assigned section(s) andshift(s).
  • Keeps accurate attendance records onall associates; maintains time and attendance records for thedepartment.
  • Assists the Director / Manager inmaintaining the Laboratory budget to include monthly analysis andvariance reporting on expense detail.
  • Assiststhe Director / Manager in associate performance conversations thatdrive merit increases.
  • Develops, implements,and maintains current procedural manuals of all tests performed inthe section(s) assigned and updates and reviews manuals bienniallyor more often as necessary.
  • Enforces allsafety policies and procedures.
  • Researches,evaluates, and implements new and improved procedures,methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as assigned by theDirector / Manager, or Supervisor.
  • Implements anappropriate section and / or shift-specific Quality Control Programand maintains all applicable Quality Control and FunctionalVerification records.
  • Is responsible formonitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure thatacceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.

Reviewsthe work done by technologists / technicians working in thesection(s) or shift(s) assigned to ensure a minimum of errors andcorrective action in the interest of good patient care.

Refersclinical problems to the laboratory director, manager, orsupervisor as appropriate.

Assures that allremedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from thelaboratory's established performance specifications.

Ensures thatpatient test results are not reported until all corrective actionshave been taken and the test system is properlyfunctioning.

Operates, maintains, andtroubleshoots all equipment in assigned section(s) to keep in goodworking order; makes minor repairs and adjustments when necessary;

initiates and follows through with Biomedical Engineering / equipmentmanufacturer for safety checks and repairs; schedules preventivemaintenance within section with Biomedical Engineering, equipmentmanufacturer, or an outside contractor.

  • Prepares and submits routine or specialadministrative and technical reports by due dates as required,requested, or delegated.
  • Orders and maintainsinventories for all necessary supplies and reagents in assignedsection(s) to always have an adequate amount on hand.
  • Trains new technologists and technicians inthe assigned section(s) procedures and policies and providessubsequent training in all new or revised procedures and techniquesfor assigned shift(s) or provides remedial training as necessary.

Responsible for maintaining orientation records on newassociates.

  • Assists the Director / Manager indesigning, implementing, collecting, and analyzing data, andreporting all phases of a comprehensive performance improvementprogram that involves laboratory personnel in PerformanceImprovement activities.
  • Prepares and conductsin-service education either formally or informally for assignedsection(s) and shift(s).
  • Provides input onpersonnel for hire, fire, transfer, interview, disciplinaryprobation, etc; counsels and documents technical deficiencies.
  • Performs skills review and competencyassessments and maintains appropriate documentation on alltechnical personnel as delegated by the LaboratoryManager / Director.
  • Oversees and enforcesexpectations of personnel in assignedsection(s).
  • Participates in proficiencytesting surveys; reviews and evaluates results and maintains copiesof survey records in section(s).
  • Coordinatesand attends meetings as required to discuss changes anddevelopments regarding policies, equipment, procedures, staffing,etc.
  • Utilizes and has a thorough workingknowledge of the Laboratory Information System and applicationsthereof.
  • Demonstrates competence to performassigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets thepopulation-specific and developmental needs of patients served bythe department.
  • Appropriately adapts assignedpatient assessment, treatment, and / or care methods to accommodatethe unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, andother developmental needs of each patient served.
  • Processes patient specimens, includingcollection, handling, and distribution always cognizant of minimalpediatric specimen volumes (when required).
  • Performs all routine and complicatedlaboratory procedures in the primary section to which assignedabout age (pedi) or sex-specific values.
  • Provides notification and documentation ofcritical laboratory values obtained.
  • Calculates, enters, and / or verifies results oflaboratory procedures.
  • Performs all duties ina manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does notsolicit or disclose any confidential information unless it isnecessary for the performance of assigned jobduties.
  • Keeps abreast of Medical Technology,by reading Journals, texts, and technical bulletins; attendsworkshops and seminars;

becomes active in local professionalassociations.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical,biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technologyfrom a regionally accredited college / university or Education that has been evaluated by an acceptablecredentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a US Bachelor’sdegree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratoryscience or medical technology.
  • Five (5) yearsof experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical LaboratoryScientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical LaboratoryTechnician required.
  • Five (5) years offull-time primary experience in the specific section ofresponsibility required.
  • Must provide proof ofcertification or certification eligibility for MT (ASCP), CLS(ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA / ASCP), or MT(AAB).
  • If certification with an expirationdate is held, the certification must be keptcurrent.
