Job Summary and Qualifications
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) Coding & Abstraction Quality has a lead role in the strategic support of hospital and professional coding, and clinical data abstraction quality.
The AVP provides executive leadership to the Coding Quality Review and Coding Analysis and Technology teams, recommending and creating process improvements as well as supporting the development of technology solutions to improve error detection, overall quality and quality reporting.
The AVP also initiates, executes, and manages projects and company-wide initiatives. This position requires the ability to quickly synthesize multiple issues and adapt to constantly shifting,
What you will do in the role :
- Responsible for and provides strategic and management leadership for initiatives that promote complete, accurate, timely and consistent coding and abstraction while adhering to published industry regulatory and company (HCA and Parallon) guidelines and policies.
- Coordinates the planning, implementation and monitoring of coding and abstraction quality improvement initiatives.
- Provides strategic and tactical guidance that promotes buy-in and increases awareness on facility, professional and clinical data registry abstraction topics to the HIM, Coding & Abstraction COOs, ACOOs and Directors.
- Leads the creation, completion and presentation for applicable business cases. Accountable for overall project implementation, profitability, quality, and performance of the approved business cases.
- Provides strategic guidance on various quality related activities (e.g., tools and resources, workflow, education, data collection and reporting, clinical documentation improvement).
- Collaborates with AVP, Technology and Informatics to identify, prioritize and promote key technological advances that support the strategic direction for facility, professional and clinical data registry abstraction quality efforts.
- Leads continuity and collaboration on enterprise wide coding quality trending and initiatives with the AVP of Vendor Resource Management, AVP of Clinical Data Registry Abstraction and the HIM, Coding & Abstraction COOs.
- Coordinates the research and response to patterns or escalations related to the quality of coding and / or abstraction across the various Coding and Abstraction departments / teams.
- Maintains strategic and tactical working relationships with various corporate departments (e.g., IT&S, COG, Risk Management, Dispute Resolution, Legal, Regs, Internal Audit, etc.).
- Liaisons coding guidance interpretation and standardization with the HCA Regulatory Compliance Support executive leaders, and ensures understanding and consistent application across all coding teams and personnel
- Supports the creation, deployment and maintenance of industry and internal benchmarking data (e.g., code ratios, DRG ratios, CC / MCC%s, volumes), where available, and oversees coordination of research for outliers and quality improvement action plans as appropriate.
- Organizes and directs the creation and implementation of proactive case mix index (CMI) shift detection for hospitals and divisions.
- Initiates deep analysis of coding and abstraction error root causes and recommends action plans to remediate.
- Proactively communicates coding and abstraction quality rates and improvement initiatives to Parallon leadership.
- Supporting contributor to the design of effective quality audits / reviews, controls assessments and selection the most appropriate and effective sampling methodology.
- Oversight and coordination of the selection and development of coding and abstraction education, driven by internal and external audit findings.
What qualifications you will need :
- Bachelor’s degree required (or significant related work experience), in areas like HIM, Nursing or Informatics. Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum 7 years acute care hospital and / or professional coding operations experience required, coding quality experience preferred.
- Minimum 5 years executive management / leadership experience required, preferably in a hospital related healthcare setting.
- Exposure to or management of clinical data abstraction (e.g., cancer registry, trauma registry, core measures) preferred.
- Consulting or proven work experience in areas of process reengineering, shared services, and project management strongly preferred.
- Multi-hospital experience required
- RHIA, RHIT and / or CCS preferred.
