University Assistant Fire Marshall Posting Number req19811 Department Risk Management and Safety Department Website Link Location Main Campus Address Tucson, AZ USA Position Highlights The purpose of this position is to ensure institutional compliance with Arizona State Fire Code for new construction and renovation projects.

As a key contributor, the University Assistant Fire Marshall is responsible for reviewing fire and life safety plans on building construction plans and fire protection shop drawings and issuing permits.

The scope of this responsibility ranges from new major construction projects to small remodel projects. This role supports critical research and other operational priorities by ensuring that construction projects can start and finish on schedule.

This position supervises the permit technician position.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive reviews of construction plans and renovation plans for compliance with Arizona State Fire Code, for fire and life safety issues, using the adopted ICC and NFPA codes.
  • Issues feedback and guidance to Project Managers regarding inadequacies to ensure resolution.
  • Attends planning meetings to answer questions and provide input information regarding compliance with fire and life safety codes.
  • Verifies project fees are calculated correctly and approved for receipt.
  • Issue permits in a timely manner to allow projects to begin.
  • Maintains plans, applications received, permits, inspection records, certificates of occupancy, and other related records of plan reviews for compliance purposes.
  • Confer with university project managers, project architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure proper interpretation of adopted / recognized codes and university design and specification standards regarding fire and life safety issues.
  • Respond to and provide assistance to stakeholders in the UA community, including Facility Services (inspectors, project manager, etc.

Maintain certification and technical knowledge of fire and life safety systems, codes and construction materials and methods by attending appropriate conferences and seminars, reviewing professional publications, taking classes, and participating in professional development activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Plan Review Certification from ICC or NFPA
  • Working knowledge of adopted building and fire codes.
  • Knowledge of building permit and plan review processes.
  • Computer skills commensurate with digital platforms

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years’ experience in fire and building construction plan review using adopted fire and building codes.
