Harris County Public Health has created a new program, HART (Holistic Approach Response Team), which is the fourth branch of its first responder system.
HART teams are composed of an EMT and a mental health / social worker and respond to community service / social welfare and mental health calls that are non-violent in nature and where there is no criminal involvement.
Harris County’s goal is to bring a public health approach to these types of calls and provide the most effective community safety response.
We are looking for motivated, compassionate, and open minded Crisis Intervention Specialists to join the HART Team. As a mental health care worker / social worker, you will be working hand in hand with an EMT to assess and provide resources and outreach to individuals experiencing an acute social or mental / behavioral health issue.
You will be an important part of DEMA’s team bringing support to those in need in this brand new program.
This program aims to help improve community health and safety, save law enforcement and emergency services time and resources, and help to reduce racial disparities in the criminal justice system.
- Please note : this is a first responder program that operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, including holidays*
- Please note : Candidates must be able to attend our mandatory new hire training academy for four weeks*
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Respond to calls for non-emergency community care services
- Assess a patient’s condition and determine if the patient is stable or requires EMS or law enforcement assistance
- Clearly explain procedures to patients and relay information to others
- Transfer patients to designated community care facilities or EMS
- Refer patients to community based resources in an effort to keep them out of the hospitals and criminal justice system
- Document resources / support given to patients in a prompt and effective manner via electronic system
Qualifications :
- Ability to sit, bend and stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs from ground to waist level
- Ability to coordinate activities closely with others in stressful situations
- Ability to effectively communicate Verbal / Written English
- Ability to take direction and adapt to changing situations / job duties
- Ability to deescalate complex situations by using Trauma Informed Care and harm reduction practices
- 2 Years experience in mental health services preferred
- Bilingual is preferred but not mandatory
- Must possess the ability to write simple correspondence or reports and document electronically
- Must possess the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees and / or managers
- Must be knowledgeable of company protocols, operational procedures and safety policies
- Must have a clean driving record
