Duties and Responsibilities
SERVICE ADMINISTRATION & ACADEMIC INTERVENTION PROGRAMS
Designs, implements, and evaluates a monthly workshop series geared to retain underclassmen on the education pathway by developing the skills, knowledge, and capabilities to succeed at UHWO and build the professional dispositions necessary for succeeding in teacher education.
Elements of this role, include, but are not limited to :
a. Assist students to define their needs and interests.
b. Enable students to understand needs in the context of community resources.
c. Instruct students through Hawaiian language, culture, history, knowledge, dispositions, and values.
d. Engage students in cultural humility reflection designed to examine their assumptions and biases as well as to deepen their understanding of themselves, their families, and the complexity of social problems and solutions to improve the welfare of their communities.
Develops, implements, and evaluates bridging and retention strategies with partners at UHWO and beyond to enhance and support HCBE approaches to teaching and learning.
Elements of this role include, but are not limited to :
a. Consult with faculty and staff to articulate clear teaching and learning goals for students.
b. Work with faculty and staff to ensure the rigor of the HCBE mentorship framework.
c. Collaborate with faculty and staff to establish criteria for identifying and selecting sites for civic engagement and service learning to ensure productive learning opportunities for everyone involved.
d. Use professional experiences from, and knowledge of K-12 strengths-based strategies, Hawaiian Culture Based Education, and the Hawaii Department of Education's Na Hopena Ao to support the development of educationally purposeful and meaningful learning opportunities.
e. Conduct in-class instruction that incorporates, demonstrates, and models the application of HCBE strategies and pedagogies.
Develops a schedule to perform grade and wellness checks with underclassman secondary education candidates as part of a continuous systems of support Elements of this role include, but are not limited to :
a. Collaborating with the rest of the HKH team as well as community organizations and educational organizations in fulfilling a system of support based on retention and success in higher education.
b. Work with community organizations and educational organizations to establish and implement risk management procedures to protect students, the institution, and the community agencies.
ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES
- Develops with the Project Director and Coordinator the HCBE Mentorship framework for this project.
- Exercises budgetary discretion and accountability for appropriate use of grant funds.
- This role includes, but is not limited to collaborating with fiscal personnel to prepare and / or amend the grant's budget, adhere to procurement procedures, and produce fiscal reports.
- Responsible for grant deliverables and adherence to grant regulations, including collaborating to write the project's evaluation report, garnering institutional and partnership support, creating and sustaining strong connections and relationships with partners, and ensuring transparent communication.
Elements of this role include, but are not limited to :
a. Maintain adherence to project timelines, project objectives, and performance measures related to grant goals.
b. Remain current on Title III and US Department of Education policies and grant terms & conditions to ensure that the project operates in full compliance throughout the period of federal support.
c. Work with senior staff in prioritizing and institutionalizing new programs, projects, practices, and capital improvements stemming from grant goals.
d. Work with campus community, external constituencies, community groups, and other institutions of higher education to promote grant activities and leverage support for ongoing grant activities.
e. Attend conferences and training, as needed or required, to maintain compliance of the grant.
- Defines and collects data relevant to support achievement of grant goals and objectives.
- Develops, interprets, implements, evaluates, and revises, as needed, appropriate policies and operational procedures governing Hoopuliko Kumu Hou Project, working closely with appropriate University offices and others to review and evaluate such policies and procedures.
OTHER
Participates via institutional and / or personal membership in various national professional associations appropriate to the position (e.
g. American College Personnel Administration, Council for Opportunity in Education, National Association for Developmental Educators, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, National Council on Student Development, etc.).
- Serves and contributes on University-wide committees, planning efforts, and programs appropriate to the position.
- This position is responsible for providing leadership in developing and implementing bridge and retention strategies for Hoopuliko Kumu Hou, a Title III project.
- This position will collaborate with partners Leeward Community College, HIDOE, other educational and state organizations as well as faculty and staff at UHWO to provide seamless guidance, mentorship and advising support to project participants.
- The position will coordinate with other project staff and leadership to ensure that project students receive appropriate and continual support through an HCBE mentorship framework.
- The HCBE mentorship framework is designed to improve their capacity to employ Hawaiian / indigenous language, culture, history, knowledge systems, dispositions, and value systems to earn their teaching degree and licensure.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in in educational technology, instructional design, informational technology creative media, or a related field and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for educational services or assistance involving instructional design, instructional systems development, curriculum development, instructional delivery, distance education, online learning, or related functional area; or equivalent
- Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in project management, teacher education, and / or minority student learning and success demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
- Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with grant program and fiscal management in education.
- Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the workplace.
- Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
- Any equivalent combination of education and / or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Strong knowledge and application of indigenous knowledge systems and Native Hawaiian history, culture, language, and practice in teaching and learning.
- Expertise in applying principles, materials, practices, procedures, techniques, and concepts related to mentorship, academic advising, and counselling to support minority student learning and success, especially those of Native Hawaiian ancestry.
- Knowledge of, and experience in quantitative and qualitative data collection, analyses, and dissemination.
- Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Ability to establish, lead, and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, stakeholders, and individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds, especially with those from Native Hawaiian communities.
- Demonstrated ability to assess and evaluate student needs and design and deliver a responsive program or service.
- Ability to travel and work outside normally scheduled work hours, including evenings and / or weekends.
- Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and / or training.
Desirable Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of community, secondary, and post-secondary educational systems.
- Experience in providing direct services to communities in West Oahu.
- Familiarity with Native Hawaiian communities, agencies, and organizations.
- Fluent in Olelo, Ike and Nohana Hawaii; working knowledge and application of Hawaiian History, Culture and Practice as applied to education.
- Skilled in working with diverse student populations that include at-risk, socio-economically disadvantaged, underrepresented, and / or non-traditional students.
