Summary of Job Duties :

This position, housed in the Community Pediatrics section of the Department of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine, consists of 2 distinct but complementary, non-clinical, roles and is fundamentally a manager position with half-time given to each of the research and program roles.

UAMS Community Pediatrics navigates the intersection of advocacy, public health, direct clinical service and social determinants of health with an emphasis on serving the underserved and magnifying their voice to the state of Arkansas and beyond.

We work to provide exceptional, family-centered care driven by scientific discovery and evidence-based medicine. Our sections’ research is centered on improving child health outcomes, health equity and performing community-based research which informs and shapes local, state and federal policy around child health.

In addition to spearheading the research mission of the Community Pediatrics, the person in this role will also be the Site Manager for Children’s HealthWatch.

Children’s HealthWatch (CHW) is a nonpartisan network of pediatricians, public health researchers, and children’s health and policy experts committed to improving children’s health in America, headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.

Since 1998, Children’s HealthWatch has collected data in healthcare settings to study the impact of public policy on the health, nutrition, and development of children ages zero to four.

Between Community Pediatrics and CHW roles, a successful candidate will be able to manage all aspects of research, from literature review, grant development and Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol development and maintenance, including supervision of research staff and students and interaction with leadership and peers.

The candidate will also develop and maintain relationships with the entire Community Pediatrics section as well as clinical and community partners in Central Arkansas.

Ideally, the candidate will have direct experience or in-depth understanding of data collection, needs assessments, qualitative and quantitative research, research management and community engagement.

The candidate will be expected to function independently and work collaboratively across multiple teams, adhere to deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a highly organized manner.

Successful candidates will have a can-do attitude, strong communication skills, including both written and verbal, and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in one of the social or behavioral sciences such as psychology, social work, public health, sociology, anthropology, health science or related field plus 5 years of clinical research experience

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills :

Computer data entry experience and advanced level of computer program proficiency

Preferred Qualifications

Master Degree in Language, Education, Psychology, Sociology, or Related Field PLUS five (5) years of research coordinator experience, preferably in an academic medical setting, including 1 or more years of supervisory experience

Preferred Knowledge, Abilities and Skills :

Spanish language fluency, spoken and written.

Responsibilities :

Overall responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects of IRB process, for both roles, including but not limited to : training, protocol development and improvement, submission, interaction, modification, continuing review and protocol closure.
  • Assists with the development of manuscripts and abstracts for publication.
  • Assists in composing / developing / submitting applications for grants, contracts, and research project funding.
  • Supervises students or other research staff.
  • Assists with dissemination of findings in non-academic settings, gives presentations and communicates with diverse audiences.
  • Maintains electronic equipment related to job (in both UAMS and ACRI systems).

Community Pediatrics-specific

  • Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives. This includes researchers within all areas of UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the Arkansas Department of Health and community organizations.
  • Assists with development and support of community-facing research, community-academic partnerships, stakeholder engagement and community facing programs.
  • Works collaboratively with a diverse set of public agencies, policymakers, and state and local constituency groups to include advocacy groups, parents / families and grassroots organizing groups.

Conducts literature searches to support hypotheses and assist in their formation, grant ideas and to monitor for innovative, methodologies or exemplary institutional programs related to community pediatrics.

Communicate this information to section faculty.

Assists with planning, development and execution of activities in clinical settings.

Children’s HealthWatch-specific

  • Develops and execution of research management including hiring, training and deployment of interviewer, supporting data collection, cleaning and analytic processes, utilization of REDCap and complying with IRB protocols.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings.
  • Conducts CHW interviews to meet goals in the event of interviewer turnover.
  • In consultation with the CHW Director of Multisite Operations, maintains and updates site operations to include Manual of Procedures.
  • Plans, conducts, and manages research projects within the network, federal, and institutional regulations and policies.
  • Ability to access and abstract data from ACH EPIC.
  • Interacts with CHW leadership and data-focused staff on site data collection, integrity and management.
  • Interacts and proactively coordinates with all sites in the network (currently Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Boston) including staff and other PIs.
  • Attends and contributes as appropriate to all CHW-wide meetings to include Science and Operations meetings, Site Manager, Executive Council meetings and called meetings.

Intermittent travel to Boston for Executive Council meetings should be expected.

  • Working knowledge (but not management) of site budget, ability to order supplies via Workday, management of gift card or other subject incentive processes if appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the research programs.
