Duties and Responsibilities The MT10 Success Coach will carry a caseload of students whose academic journeys are in a variety of majors, additional support and guidance through the Career & Employment Center will support undeclared students within their first year.

The coach will meet a minimum of once a month with their students and support their cohort on a day-to-day basis. With this, the MT10 Success Coach will continue to work closely with and support students through the entirety of their enrollment at MSUB;

this support includes but is not limited to :

  • Reviewing student progress and utilizing community and academic support services
  • Providing consistent outreach to faculty and other MSUB staff to support student success
  • Accompanying students to meet with various departments on campus to ensure that any barriers to the students’ continuation at MSUB are resolved (i.

e., financial aid, business services, mental health services, etc.)

  • Providing consistent communication with students.
  • Referring students to campus and community resources as needed to address barriers
  • Working in team settings to create a wraparound support network for MT10 students
  • Supporting student transfers within the system
  • Carrying out best practices in advising and objectives set by the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education

The MT10 Success Coach will collaborate closely with academic departments, professional and faculty advisors, the advising center, and primary contacts in academic program.

This is to ensure smooth transitions of each student into respective academic departments and majors after initial advising and general education evaluation is complete.

This position is also responsible for tracking students’ progress and will adhere to the MT10 guidelines and associated best practices in advising.

Management and Supervision of Others

MT10 is a highly collaborative team. No one functions independently as it would be counterproductive to the program. Success Coaches have a high level of skill in terms of communication within the program as they provide mutual support to all MT10 program employees.

Required Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities :

  • Demonstrated commitment to students and to public education
  • Ability to support students in developing strategies to overcome difficulties, academic and personal, by identifying and addressing factors contributing to poor academic performance
  • Make referrals to campus and community resources as needed
  • Act as a liaison between students, academic departments, and support resource offices
  • Develop relationships of trust and establish meaningful connections with departmental advisors, TRIO, NAAC, MVSC, housing, athletics, admissions, financial aid, business services, registrar’s office and others
  • Serve as an initial point of contact for all MT10 students considering the MSUB City College and University campuses
  • Train and coach students in the use of academic resources
  • A foundational understanding of the principles of student success coaching
  • Ability to advise students regarding a myriad of issues from course selection to withdrawals and referrals to additional student support services, financial aid, Student Health Services, counseling, and tutoring
  • Ability to learn and familiarize oneself with MSUB academic policies and procedures
  • Ability to forge and foster professional relationships across MSUB campus and community stakeholders such at Montana High Schools, and Gear Up high schools in the surrounding areas
  • Ability to become knowledgeable about MSUB support and services offices
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening skills
  • Experienced use of computer software programs, including MS Word, Excel, and MS Outlook
  • Collect and maintain student performance data to document patterns associated with retention

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and / or Abilities :

  • Associates degree and at least (3) years of academic advising experience or related experience in a higher education setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Knowledge of basic skills in active listening, rapport building and / or individualized student support models
  • Experience working in team settings and interdisciplinary collaboration

Post-Training Position Knowledge, Skills, & Position Expectations

  • Ability to use Banner effectively and knowledge of FERPA guidelines; ability to communicate in accordance with federal statutes with students, parents, and others who are concerned about a student’s welfare
  • Ability to assess student needs and provide the appropriate MSUB referrals, including but not limited to : academic standing, social involvement, and general student wellbeing
  • Ability to create, maintain, and strengthen professional relationships with students over time
  • Ability to create strong working relationships with various departments, staff, and faculty on campus
  • Proactive advocacy, both on campus and in the community, for student and program growth
  • Assist students in navigating any obstacles that inhibit student success
  • Using student centered approaches to analyzing student behaviors and academic performance
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration both at MSUB and in the community
  • Ability to focus on students lived experience in relation to their academic performance, social engagement, and community involvement
  • Establish contacts with other MT10 schools (Missoula College, Helena College, the University of Montana, and any additional MUS schools following scaling) to help retain students to any of the for completion of a certificate or degree (bachelor’s or associate) program
  • Utilize various student information systems, including myInfo, D2L, Degree Works and Degree Planner, EAB Navigate, etc.

to assess student progress and documentation

  • Assist students with academic appeals, withdrawal petitions, reinstatement plans, degree planning and graduation applications
  • Ability to effectively use and assist others with advising technologies
  • Advise MT10 students on academic standards, major selection and requirements, General Education requirements, and academic policies and procedures
  • Advise MT10 students on academic program planning prior to completing online orientation
  • Ability to learn in detail undergraduate curriculums at MSUB
  • Understanding of student transfer articulations
  • Understanding historical trauma, systemic discrimination, and institutionalized poverty
