The School of Psychology atthe University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applications for two full-time,9-month, Assistant Teaching Professorpositions beginning August 2025.
This exciting opportunity is available to Doctorallevel graduates with exceptional teaching abilities and a desire to support theundergraduate and graduate programs at Southern Miss.
Teaching track facultyare permanent faculty, and eligible for promotion. We are especially interestedin colleagues who support the mission of the University and supportstudent success initiatives designed to promote retention of diverse, first-generationcollege students.
One positionwill primarily serve the undergraduate program at the smaller Gulf Park campus area of specialization is open.
Faculty on this campus enjoy a scenic campusacross from the Gulf of Mexico and smaller class sizes. A second position willprimarily serve the larger Hattiesburg campus which will include teachingcourses which serve a diverse undergraduate major and opportunities tocontribute to the graduate programs offered in the School.
At the undergraduate level,faculty may have opportunities to teach on both campuses. Depending on theapplicant’s background, at the graduate level, licensed or license-eligibleteaching track faculty can be involved on the Hattiesburg campus in clinicaltraining, practicum supervision in our in-house training clinic, and teachinggraduate-level courses.
Opportunities for programleadership in the Master’s Counseling Psychology program are available to highlyqualified applied applicants, but not required.
Although Mississippi does notrequire postdoctoral hours for licensure, opportunities for peer supervisionduring the licensure process are available from licensed faculty.
The School of Psychology has approximately 600 undergraduatemajors across two campuses and 125 graduate students completing programs in oneof three APA-accredited doctoral programs (Counseling, Clinical, & School),a doctoral program in Experimental Psychology and an MPCAC-accredited Master’sprogram in Counseling Psychology.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Teaching a combination of undergraduate and graduate classes in areas of expertise.
- Contributing to the mission of the university and profession through service activities focused on teaching and student success initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree in Psychology, or related area, by August 2025. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven track record of innovative teaching practices and the ability to teach effectively at the university level.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff and faculty from diverse backgrounds, programs, colleges.
- Knowledge of the field of Psychology.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong applicants will demonstrate the potential for excellence inundergraduate teaching. Applied applicants who are licensed or license-eligibleas a psychologist in the state of Mississippi;
graduates from APA-accreditedprograms in Clinical, Counseling or School Psychology (by August 2025) arepreferred.
