POSITION OBJECTIVE :

This position is responsible for supporting students in secondary schools who qualify for English Learner supports.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES : (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Deliver appropriate instruction to help 6-12 English Learners successfully meet academic standards in English Language Arts or in English Language Development classes.
  • Foster English language acquisition, enhance academic progress, and build students’ self-esteem in EL classrooms and the school as a whole.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, administrators, curriculum developers, parents and students to ensure academic success for English Learners.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers regularly and participate on building equity and leadership teams and / or committees.
  • Co plan with classroom teachers emphasizing appropriate strategies to use with English Learners.
  • Organize and support state-required testing.
  • Maintain files with required paperwork for each student in the ELL program.
  • Provide District ELL office with updated student information as requested.
  • Complete and distribute all necessary ELL forms. Participate on the guidance team or multidisciplinary team when a student in the ELL program is discussed.
  • Share information when assessing and serving ELL students with special needs.
  • Involve parents in school events, share information about translators / interpreters, advocate for second language learner parents / students.
  • Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement by establishing a culture for learning, providing clear communication with students and engaging students in learning.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching practices through use of effective questioning and discussion techniques and reflection on teaching.
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs. This will be demonstrated through knowledge of students and demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness.
  • Provide clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum through knowledge of content and pedagogy, setting instructional outcomes, knowledge of resources and designing coherent instruction.
  • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment through creating an environment of respect and rapport, managing classroom procedures, student behavior and organizing a safe physical space for student learning.
  • Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning. Teachers will design student assessments, use assessment in instruction, and maintain accurate student records.
  • Communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community through effective and ongoing communication.
  • Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning.
  • Participate in a professional community, grow and develop professionally and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Annually establish student growth goals to ensure student growth over time.
  • Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and / or building principal, in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional development.
  • Participate in site-based decision-making processes.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS :

Reports directly to and is supervised by the Supervisor of Programs for Multilingual Learners.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require) :

Required :

  • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in ELL or bilingual education.
  • Experience conferencing with parents and students regarding individual progress and program planning.
  • Experience working with other staff members to accomplish common goals, and to develop appropriate instructional strategies.

Preferred :

  • Bilingualism / Multilingualism is valued in the department.
  • Multiple endorsements areas are a benefit in this position.
  • Experience classroom teaching and coaching teachers is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with an extensive knowledge in planning and delivering academic literacy instruction in the target language and with experience in Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).

SKILLS (position requirements at entry) :

  • Ability to teach basic technology usage to students and other staff, ability to use technology to maintain program records as well as to communicate with staff and parents.
  • Ability and skills necessary to individualize instruction. Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students including gifted, mainstreamed special education, English learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop students’ technology literacy.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative or team approach.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, collaboratively and positively with students, parents, and colleagues, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with students in multi-aged groups.
  • Ability to use varied assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios, and student self-assessment.
  • Attends ongoing professional development activities, such as college course work, professional associations, workshops, and in-service opportunities.
  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

Positions in this class typically require : stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

This position may be exposed to prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required.

Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

This is a general posting for one or more Secondary ELL ELA Instructor positions. Positions may be full or part-time and will be filled as specific openings are identified.

$ 69,816 to $ 130,960 annual salary (based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement ). Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule.

Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.

Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon .45 FTE. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
