The Department of Pediatrics at University Hospitals ( RBC, Ahuja, Tripoint and St. John Medical Center ) are in search of Newborn Hospitalists to help continue with our excellent patient care.
Newborn Hospitalists will have an academic appointment within the Division of Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics.
Appointment at the level of Clinical Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or full Professor is available commensurate with experience.
Job Duties
- Attendance at all high-risk labor and delivery call, including deliveries in any part of the hospital consistent with NRP algorithms
- Complete nursery rounds by 11am absent emergent / urgent conditions or high census
- Consult and manage sick newborns admitted under private pediatricians
- Prenatal consultations in collaboration with the Neonatologist at main campus
- Coordinate transfer to higher level of care for sick newborns
- Participate and initiate quality improvement initiatives for maternal and infant care, and attend OB and Pediatric Quality meetings
- Participate and initiate Labor & Delivery and Mother-Baby staff education and training, including team and skills building through periodic mock codes
- Resident education in the care of newborns and delivery room roles
- Collaborate with other hospital departments in delivery of care to newborns, as appropriate
- Identify opportunities for academic pursuits
Position Summary
Provides and manages direct medical evaluation, diagnosis, procedures, and care for patients within a recognized area of practice or for a specified patient population.
Essential Functions
- Provides and manages direct patient care, including physical examinations, evaluations, assessments, diagnoses and treatment for a specified patient population.
- Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens as appropriate to assessed medical conditions.
- Refers patients to specialists and to relevant patient care components as appropriate.
- Trains and supervises medical students and residents engaged in specialty activities and procedures, as appropriate.
- May manage the daily operations of a specific medical program, patient care unit, or research function.
- Directs and coordinates the patient care activities of nursing and support staff as required.
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and / or infection control standards.
- As appropriate to the position, participates in specified health promotion, education and / or prevention programs.
- Maintain department productivity thresholds.
- Maintain faculty status in good standing with the CWRU SOM (if applicable).
- Adhere to core physician obligations as outlined in the Physician Policy Manual.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education
- Board certification / eligibility in general pediatrics is required.
- Experience and competency in caring for sick newborns is required.
- National Resuscitation Program certification is required.
- Quality improvement experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care. Required
- Ability to maintain quality, safety, and / or infection control standards. Required
- Knowledge of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise. Required
- Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and / or students in area of expertise. Required
- Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage. Required
- Ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops. Required
- Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise. Required
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Required
- Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements. Required
- Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress. Required
- Effective verbal and written communication skills. Required
- Experience using EPIC Preferred
