The Connecticut Department of Transportation is hiring CDL Drivers for Highway Maintenance!

The , , is now accepting applications for CDL Driver / Highway Maintenance Worker positions, in Cornwall and New Milford, CT.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

You must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement. You must also have a valid Medical Examiners Card (MEC).

Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans who possess at least two years' experience in operating a commercial motor vehicle as part of their military job requirements may qualify for these opportunities based on meeting the CDL Skills Test Exemption for Military Applicants () as outlined on the .

  • The CDL Drivers will perform a full range of tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair of State roadways, bridges, and more
  • CDL Drivers will maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist on larger equipment
  • Must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal, whenever your services are needed;

this includes mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30 (no out of state vacations will be approved during this period)

  • Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm. At times this could be up to a period of several days, including holidays and weekends

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountablefor performing a variety of moderately skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities;

operates andmaintains complex mechanical equipment; works as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages in theroutine repair of mechanical equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following is a listing of examples of trucks, equipment, tasks or related duties, the operating, maintaining or performing of which are considered to be the responsibilities and duties of positions in this class : TRUCKS :

  • Three (3) ton to nine (9) ton trucks, dump, platform or refuse with or without winch;
  • All of the above when using the following attachments : Snow plows; Duo Dump Truck; Crash Attenuators; Trailers and towed equipment (except tilt bed trailers);
  • Pickup, (to include two (2) & four (4) wheel drive vehicles) when using : Trailers or towed equipment; Snowplows or hopper type spreaders;

Bridge utility truck; Compressor trucks; Aerial bucket trucks; Wreckers with winch; Tandem / 10-Wheel Dump Truck.

EQUIPMENT :

  • Bituminous curbing machines;
  • Pothole Patcher;
  • Tractor Mowers with single flail;
  • Wood chippers;
  • Chain saws;
  • Culvert cleaning machines;
  • Compressors, and / or compressor tools;
  • Concrete mixers;
  • Concrete vibrators;
  • Hydraulic or engine driven tools;
  • Test Boring;
  • Class twenty four (24) tractor including attachments;
  • Wing plow or other side mounted attachments;
  • Fork lift.

DUTIES :

  • Survey monument setting;
  • Burning and cutting with acetylene torch;
  • Flagger (traffic control);
  • May assist a Material Storage Supervisor with stores section material handling;
  • Performing moderately skilled tasks in one or more of the following areas or trades : Construction; Maintenance; Mechanical repair;
  • Electrical; Carpentry; Masonry; Welding; Plumbing; Painting;
  • Relief ferry mate, drawbridge attendant and / or rest area attendant;
  • In addition to other duties, may assist a Transportation General Supervisor, Transportation Garage Supervisor, or Transportation District Electrical Supervisor in preparing and checking various reports or operating a two-way radio in a District Maintenance unit;
  • Wildlife hazard control;
  • Radio monitoring and communication;
  • Escort vendors, contractors, etc. in secure areas (state owned airports only);
  • In addition to other duties, may function as a guard / watchperson or be required to receive training in, stand by for and respond to fire and / or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of the construction, maintenance, and repair techniques of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports; the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades;
  • Skills interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to use and make routine repairs to complex mechanical equipment; operate equipment as listed on the attached addendum;

understand and follow written and oral instructions; utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing,maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, in work involving the operationand care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for the General Experience.
  • Successful completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with snow removal
  • Experience with landscaping
  • Experience with construction
  • Experience driving CDL vehicles
  • Experience working with heights

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and / or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At state airports : In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, athorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified forappointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination will be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
  • The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.

Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
