Job summary

This is an exciting new position within interventional radiology to work in a senior nursing / ODP role. Within this role you will work with the Senior Sister supporting the leadership and management of the nursing / ODP team.

You will be someone who has good communication skills and a professional approach to work, acting as a role model to the wider team.

You must strive to achieve excellence and support ongoing quality improvement initiatives within the team.

You will need to be able to make quick decisions, have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to be able to provide our clinicians with the crucial support they require.

This will include developing a good understanding and knowledge of large volumes of specialist equipment, their use and technical information.

Family friendly hours of Monday to Friday with an on call commitment at weekends and out of hours in the week after training.

Main duties of the job

You will need to be able to :

Work clinically in the interventional Radiology department, delivering and overseeing care

Effectively manage the team of nurses and ODP's

Deliver staff training and audits

Provide assurance to the senior sister of high levels of patient care and staff training

Work as part of the multi-disciplinary team ensuring safe delivery of care.

The ideal candidate will be a first level registered nurse, or qualified ODP. Experience in interventional radiology or theatres would be an advantage but is not essential.

Willingness to undertake training and act as a student supervisor / assessor is essential.

The successful applicant would after training take part in an on call rota and therefore a driving licence and access to a car is essential.

Newcastle Hospitals has an outstanding reputation for its interventional radiology expertise, providing life-saving diagnostic and therapeutic treatment for patients from all over the North East and North Cumbria.

Our specialists deliver complex and minimally invasive x-ray guided procedures and are at the forefront of the very latest techniques in a fast-paced, ever evolving specialism using image guidance covering many specialties including vascular, oncology, hepatobiliary and gastroenterology.

Newcastles main hospital sites at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital both benefit from pioneering interventional radiology departments and we are seeking enthusiastic nurses or operating department practitioners with an innovative outlook who enjoy being challenged in a fast-paced environment to join our dynamic, multidisciplinary team.

Many of our procedures, whilst minimally invasive, can be daunting for patients. We approach all our daily work with the ethos that patients remain at the heart of everything we do, in line with the trusts Vision and Values.

  • To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP is absent.
  • In areas within the organisation Nurses / ODPs may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch) / Operating Department Practitioner
  • Current NMC / HCPC registration
  • Diploma in a health related subject, prepared to take degree level study
  • Specialist qualification if relevant to role or previous experience
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship)

Desirable

  • Degree in health related subject
  • Relevant specialist qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Previous post registration experience which must be relevant and recent
  • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development
  • Understanding of professional accountability in a leadership role
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
  • Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding

Desirable

  • Audit / research experience
  • Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty cannulation / IV drug administration / scrub skills relevant to speciality / anaesthetic skills appropriate to speciality.
