We have a unique opportunity for a Senior Program Manager, Engineering for Sustainable Development (ESD) to join our team.

The Senior Program Manager, ESD will report to the Director, Engineering for Sustainable Development, and work closely with colleagues in the ASME Engineering for Sustainable Development (ESD) team, Engineering for Change (E4C) team, affiliates, and key members of the E4C and ESD Volunteer Leadership as well as colleagues across the Society.

The Senior Program Manager, ESD will conduct strategic planning, implementation, business development, and management of a portfolio of ESD and E4C programs in the engineering for global development space.

ESD and E4C programs engage a growing and active community of key stakeholders, E4C Fellows, and experts to advance workforce development, technology-based solutions, and demand-driven knowledge, means, and methods for sustainable development.

The identification and structuring of programs will be supported by impact strategy, revenue generation, needs assessment, resource alignment, and evaluation processes.

The Senior Program Manager will be expected to oversee all aspects of the program strategy, management, business development, and operations process, including design, implementation, impact, resourcing, and evaluation.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, with a Certificate or Master’s in Sustainable Development, Strategic Design, or Public Administration.

They should have demonstrated knowledge and experience in sustainable development, social entrepreneurship, and social innovation.

A minimum of 5 years of project management experience, including staff and budget oversight, is required, along with 3 years in engineering, technology, science, or entrepreneurship within a tech venture.

Familiarity with management, accounting processes, and digital tools is essential.

Familiarity with mechanical engineering and relevant areas such as manufacturing, energy, aerospace, robotics, and bioengineering is highly desirable.

The Senior Program Manager, ESD Should Also Possess the Following Key Qualifications :

Strategy and Impact :

Support the evolution and implementation of ESD’s enterprise strategy and impact goals as outlined in the Theory of Change.

Collaborate with the ESD team to shape and refine ESD and E4C’s business processes and continuously evaluate progress against strategic priorities.

Develop and refine business plans for new and existing programs, products, and services, ensuring both impact and financial sustainability.

Work closely with key staff in Programs & Philanthropy, ESD, and E4C to implement initiatives that engage and collaborate with stakeholders.

  • Assess and prioritize business opportunities to maximize impact, sustainability, and efficient resource allocation.
  • Define partnership strategies, managing relationships with enterprise partners, contributors (e.g., Steering Committee members), and a community of experts.

Foster engagement and collaboration to meet enterprise goals.

  • Collaborate with E4C and ESD staff to integrate insights from program learnings and external stakeholders, ensuring strategic evolution over time.
  • Conduct due diligence and assist in partner agreement negotiations .

Program Management :

  • Develop a portfolio of programs and organizational models aligned with ESD’s business and impact goals, using market assessments and stakeholder consultations.
  • Apply project management, monitoring, and evaluation skills to advance ESD’s program portfolio, measuring performance against objectives in the Theory of Change.
  • Optimize programs and processes to generate revenue, reduce costs, expedite deliverables, identify partners, and enhance reach and impact.
  • Work closely with ESD leadership and ASME’s Programs and Philanthropy teams on budget management and annual planning.
  • Collaborate with the ASME Foundation to create compelling case statements for external funding.
  • Co-design marketing strategies with the ASME Marketing and ESD teams to support high-impact program promotion.

Thought Leadership and Advocacy :

  • Represent ESD’s expertise and credibility in the technology for development sector at key forums and events.
  • Present evidence, such as case studies, to support advocacy efforts and influence stakeholders around ESD’s priority issues.
  • Serve as a resource on topics related to engineering, sustainable development, innovation, product development, research methods, and communities of practice.
  • Write and present case statements and conduct relevant reviews and landscape analyses.

This role is eligible for remote work arrangement. Periodic business travel may be required, including but not limited to, ASME offices, globally.

Annual base salary may vary based on geographic location. The New York metro salary range for this position is estimated to be between $120,000.00-$130,000.00.
