Primary Purpose The Electronics Technician (Temporary) will be responsible for providing technical support for faculty and students in the School of Engineering and Computer Science.

This will include support for student projects, instructional labs, Makerspace operations and faculty research. This is a full-time, temporary position, which is expected to last eighteen (18) weeks. Essential Functions

Lab Maintenance : Organize, test, and maintain engineering lab equipment and components in coordination with faculty and other laboratory staff.

Assist faculty in preparation of experiments and demonstrations prior to class meeting to confirm proper and safe operation of laboratory equipment.

Maintain lab cleanliness and organization.

Purchasing and Budgeting : Receive, distribute, track, and maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment parts.Advise and prepare purchase order requests for equipment and tool purchases for the machine shop and laboratories.

Assist in the acquisition of quotes from vendors for proposed purchases.

Safety : Monitor compliance with University and California safety standards and assure that faculty and students using laboratories are compliant with safety training.

Maintain current knowledge of rules and regulations regarding equipment use and safety.Instruct and supervise students on the use of equipment to ensure safe operation.

  • Student and Faculty Support : Provide direct service, guidance, and supervision for student projects.Work with faculty to prepare lab activities and provide support for faculty projects.
  • Other : Assist Makerspace Operations Manager with activities such as daily assignments, general building maintenance and general work requests.

Other duties as assigned.

Associate’s Degree or equivalent progress in a Bachelor of Science program in engineering technology, science, or engineering related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology or a science or engineering related field.
  • One (1) year of experience in safe operation of electronic test equipment and working with hazardous voltages.
  • Understanding of basic electronic theory, electronic components and their data sheets.
  • Proficiency in the operation of electronic equipment, such as oscilloscope, multimeters, power supplies, function generators, logic analyzer, soldering stations.
  • Experience in reading engineering design drawings, such as wiring and schematics.
  • Prototyping of electronic circuits.
  • Knowledge of printed circuit board design (through-hole and surface mount).
  • Knowledge of and experience with storing and handling laboratory equipment, safety and hazardous waste disposal procedures.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Ability to follow technical and safety instructions.
  • Experience in working effectively with students, staff and faculty in a diverse institute of higher education.
  • Experience in an engineering working environment.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for general communication and documentation.
  • Positive attitude and proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations; demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Work Environment / Work Week / Travel :

Work is performed primarily in a lab setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of chemical hazards, explosive hazards, burn hazards and electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Work usually performed during standard business hours. Additional days may be required to meet business needs.

Hiring Range $27.00 - $30.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
