Job Summary

UT Southwestern is seeking a skilled and experienced Power System Technician II for our Thermal Energy Plant team. This position works under minimal supervision to perform skilled level operation and maintenance of power generation systems and machinery in central and / or electrical generation plant environment.

Maintains and repairs life safety, back-up and peak shaving power emergency generator systems to ensure reliable electrical power to campus.

Emergency Generator Systems at the UTSWMC consisting of diesel, natural gas, and gasoline engines for driving electrical generators ranging in size from 5kW to 3MW.

The ideal candidate will have at least seven (7) years of hands-on experience working on and troubleshooting generators and transfer switches, knowledge interpreting schematics, knowledge of NFPA requirements for hospitals and clinics, and experience in diesel mechanics.

Work Location : Dallas Campus, 6071 Forest Park Rd, Dallas, TX 75235; assist other UTSW locations as needed.

Shift Requirement : 7 : 00 AM to 3 : 30 PM, flexible availability

Minimum Experience and Education Requirements

  • Requires high school graduation, vocational school or GED equivalent
  • Requires seven (7) years of experience in utilities or industrial trade, including experience in stationary IC power generators, metering, relaying and control responsibilities, general maintenance, servicing, and repair of diesel and other gaseous IC engines and other electrical systems related to light and heavy-duty machinery and equipment;

or five (5) years of experience and two-year technical electrical or mechanical trade school; or military training / apprenticeship.

Preferred Experience and Education

  • Completion of EGSA or similar certification and experience in university and hospital campus environments.
  • Experience with paralleling gear.
  • Experience with peak shaving.
  • Class A and B UST license.
  • EPA method 9 opacity certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work requires outstanding initiative and leadership skills.

  • Applicable local, state and national regulations such CARB and EPA. state and national regulations including knowledge of Continuous Emissions Monitor for NOx and other emissions.
  • Work requires good overall knowledge of tools of trade, standard office eqpt, PC based automation control systems and Microsoft Office
  • Work may require working in manholes and tunnels, and / or extended shifts.
  • Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling / pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • This will require driving a university vehicle or equipment to various locations around campus Electricity, Prime Movers, Generators / Alternators, Engine Generator Instrumentation and Controls, Governors, Automatic Transfer Switches, Voltage Regulators, Multiple Generator Switchgear & Controls, Auxiliary Support Systems, Startup / Commissioning, and Troubleshooting System Problems.
  • Knowledge of SCADA and PLCs related to electrical monitoring, IC power generation and controls preferred.
  • Familiar with multiple makes, models, and types of generators and switchgear.
  • UST, AST, fuel monitoring systems and fuel distribution controls
  • Use electrical testing and calibration equipment to include but not limited to :
  • Digital-Volt-OHM-Meters (DVOM), Mega-ohmmeters, Oscilloscopes, Power Quality Meters, and Loop Calibrators.
  • Use calibrated mechanical tools to include but not limited to torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, and vacuum and pressure manometers.

Job Duties

  • Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts power generating and switching systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
  • Operates switchboards and synchronizes generators.
  • Adjusts frequency, voltage, and loads on 13.8 kV and 4.16 kV systems.
  • Performs, oversees contractors and coordinates weekly, monthly and annual preventive maintenance of generators, load bank testing, emissions testing, and repairs
  • Diagnoses and performs necessary generator repairs, for example, radiator hoses, block heaters, battery chargers, water pumps, etc.

as well as assists in the major repairs on generators.

  • Test fuel, coolant, and oil.
  • Diagnoses electrical parts on engines and appropriate transfer switches and interprets schematic wiring.
  • Assists in development and implementation of the weekly, monthly, and annual preventive maintenance schedule for all generators
  • Provides fueling services to all campus emergency generators after normal and emergency operation.
  • Installs and maintains all data acquisition and telemetry equipment
  • Monitors equipment and maintains records and logs of equipment operational status, maintenance and repairs.
  • Including load banking and testing of the automatic transfer switch for Hospital Joint Commission and TCEQ / EPA compliance.
  • Tests and calibrates all meters and protective devices.
  • Repairs and modifies all control circuitry and auxiliary devices.
  • Designs and documents all retrofits of outdated equipment.
  • Reviews and evaluates submittal drawings of equipment.
  • Assists in the commissioning of new generator projects and maintains constant communication with contractors during the installation process.
  • Performs detailed inspections of operating equipment for proper operation.
  • Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems or deficiencies and takes appropriate action and makes recommended corrective procedures.
  • Orders, receives and maintains inventory of materials, supplies and tools.
  • Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas.
  • Transport and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • May complete work orders using automated maintenance program systems.
  • The position is considered essential and will require attendance during emergencies and other planned and unplanned events.
  • Extended shifts may be required.
  • Assists with developing specification and reviewing bid tabulations of required equipment.
  • Assists with time and material estimates required for job.
  • Works in conjunction with trades or craft personnel in support of systems within power plants, chilling stations, utility tunnels or other underground tunnels.
  • Identifies and reports safety hazards.
  • Supervises compliance with standards of workmanship and safety.
  • Attends staff and training meetings, and plant operation and maintenance training courses.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a general office environment.
  • Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards typical to central plants, and utility distribution systems.
