Description
The Department of Environmental Science is seeking an MSEMGraduate Student Instructor (GSI) to teach our undergraduate Understanding Our Environment w / Laboratory (ENVS100L) sections for the Fall 2024 semester.
The students enrolled in these courses are non-science majors taking a required laboratory science course as a graduation requirement.
This role is only open to Graduate Students in the MSEM program.
Schedule
We are looking for a GSI who can commit to teaching 1 or 2 in-person lab sections. Each lab section is a 150 hour commitment (10 hours per week x 15 weeks (per section)) throughout the Fall 2024 semester.
Here are the lab sections for Fall 2024 :
- Mondays 8 : 30 AM - 11 : 20 AM
- Mondays 5 : 15 PM - 8 : 05 PM
- Tuesdays 8 : 30 AM - 11 : 20 AM
- Tuesdays 5 : 15 PM- 8 : 05 PM
- Wednesdays 8 : 30 AM - 11 : 20 AM
- Wednesdays 5 : 15 PM - 8 : 05 PM
- Thursdays 8 : 30 AM - 11 : 20 AM
- Thursdays 5 : 15 PM- 8 : 05 PM
You will also meet weekly with a Laboratory Coordinator (full-time faculty member, Tracy Benning
Laboratory Coordinator meetings are on Fridays 10 : 00 AM - 11 : 00 AM.
Responsibilities
You will review pre-prepared lectures provided to you by faculty members.
You will introduce the lab topic by giving a short pre-lab lecture.
You will supervise all lab activities to ensure safety and proper equipment usage.
You will review developed lab materials and manuals
You will grade and evaluate your lab section reports / submissions
You will post grades in a timely manner.
There is a professional staff person who prepares supplies / equipment and manages cleanup for each lab section so this will not be expected of you.
All lab materials and the lab manuals are already developed and those files are available for the GSI to use.
Compensation is a flat instructor rate at $3,496 per 1 full 2-unit lab section taught.

While the intent is to hire qualified GSIs as soon as possible, applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
