At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion.
Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems.
Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.
As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will develop and execute a program plan to support a rocket engine development program in the areas of Reliability, Maintainability, and System Safety.
You will be the primary focal point for RAMS topics and may lead a team of RAMS engineers to execute the RAMS program plan.
In the early phases of a program, you will focus on assessing functional hazards, developing, and allocating system safety, reliability / availability, and maintainability requirements, and defining scope vital to develop a safe and reliable engine.
In later phases of development, you will manage safety and reliability validation and verification activities, assess safety and reliability impacts of engineering changes and nonconformance’s, and ensure that design-specific safety and reliability mitigations are implemented effectively.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to continue to engage with the product team well into engine qualification, production, and vehicle system certification and operational phases of the program.
We are seeing a self-motivated and highly organized individual who can work with minimal guidance and coordinate teams in the successful execution of system safety and reliability activities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Facilitate and perform system safety and reliability analyses, identify hazards, failure causes and mitigations, and provide a detailed record of the safety risk approach
- Confirm maintainability engineers are engaged in ensuring design-for-maintainability is considered in the development process
- Balance operational efficiency and engine operating costs with safety and reliability
Minimum Qualifications :
- Proven track record of building trust and effective working relationships that improve team performance, deliver results, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
- 6+ years engineering experience in the aerospace industry with 4+ years of system safety, reliability, or RAMS engineering experience in rocket propulsion or space launch vehicles
- Knowledge of systems engineering practices throughout the product lifecycle
- Experience in design, development, integration, or testing preferably with aerospace hardware or sophisticated technical systems
- Experience performing system safety and reliability analyses, such as : Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Reliability Block Diagrams (RBDs)
- Experience with Weibull analysis and parameter estimation, stress-strength interference analyses, probability distribution estimation, reliability growth modeling, and probabilistic risk analysis
- Working understanding of configuration management principles and practices
- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- B.S. / B.A. degree in engineering or a relevant technical field
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.
S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience implementing hazard mitigations into product definition artifacts (e.g. drawings)
- Experience managing large, sophisticated system safety efforts
- Proven technical expertise with liquid rocket engines and test facilities
- Experience with reliability engineering for electrical components and circuit card assemblies
- Experience integrating sophisticated subsystems into a spacecraft, launch vehicle, or test facility
- Experience implementing, customizing, or improving system safety policy and procedure for a development engineering environment and transitioning products to operation and production
- Deep understanding of principles and practices for systems engineering
- Proven experience with reliability / life test design (failure modes discovery, life demonstration, and screening)
- Experience with failure reporting and corrective action systems (FRACAS)
- Experience using scripting languages such as VBA and Python to automate processes and analyses
- Deep understanding of principles and practices for systems engineering
- Experience with systems engineering tools such as DOORS, DNG, or similar
- Experience working in a safety-critical environment
- Basic project management skills
- Experience with prognostics and health management
