Central Sterile Endo Technician, Certified

Job Description

Main Function :

Responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, routine care and maintenance of endoscopic instruments according to manufacturer recommendations and facility standards.

Also performs sterile processing and instrument tray assembly in accordance with JCAHO and AORN regulatory requirements.

Responsible for the collection, cleaning, assembly and distribution of medical equipment to patient care areas.

Duties and Responsibilities :

• Maintain inventories of endoscopic equipment and supplies.
• Performs safety checks to verify proper equipment functioning.
• Prepares endoscopes needed for the day’s daily assignment.
• Transports supplies & scopes to and from designated area.
• Completes disinfection of equipment & accessories utilizing aseptic technique.
• Attend in-service training to validate or refresh basic professional skills.
• Read current literature, talk with colleagues or participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in endoscopy.
• Process, inspect, and pack complex instrument trays utilized in surgery, labor and deliver and nursing services.
• Performs processing and assembly of ERT and special carts, including documentation of same in the absence of available Central Supply Distribution personnel.
• Operates steam and V-Pro sterilizers to include proper documentation
• Performs visual inspection of packages during and after processing, checking for damage, expiration or correct labeling.
• Decontaminate and clean reusable items and medical equipment according to department procedures.
• Performs housekeeping duties related to supply processing
• Dispense supplies and / or equipment to designated areas based on par levels or requisition
• Adheres to the Hospital and Central Sterile policies, procedures and safety precautions
• Conducts routine inspections of CSP and user storage areas to assure quality of sterile items
• Perform other department duties as assigned.

Demonstrates support and compliance with the Maryland General Health System and subsidiary corporations’ mission, vision, philosophy, goals, objectives and policies

Qualifications

Education : High school diploma or equivalent.

• Certified in Sterile Processing from a recognized association i.e.
• International Association of Health care Central Service Materiel
• Management (IAHCSMM) or National Institute for the Certification of
• Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel (NICHSPDP) preferred. Also certification in Endoscopic Technician preferred;

certification must be obtained within one year.

Experience : Three years of experience in sterile processing and instrumentation, unless promoted from within.

Contacts : Medical Staff, Department Heads, Clinical Managers, department employees, hospital employees.

Physical Demands : Considerable standing, walking, bending and lifting of medium heavy items are inherent in this position.

Working Conditions : Well lighted, air conditioned area, but subject to heat and steam from sterilizers.

Hazards : Subject to exposure affects of chemicals and microbial contamination
