Job Summary
The Network Field Services Lead will orchestrate and elevate the capabilities of a team of Field Technicians, who are pivotal in managing the logistics, installation, enhancement, and resolution of issues pertaining to both wired and wireless network infrastructures across the university campus.
This encompasses a broad spectrum of network assets including, but not limited to, switches, routers, wireless access points, and structured cabling systems.
In this strategic role, the Lead will engage in high-level collaborations with customers, internal staff, vendors, and key stakeholders to meticulously evaluate, analyze, and address hardware and software network inquiries and challenges.
A critical aspect of this position involves ensuring that the network field team consistently adheres to established service level agreements and maintains operational excellence.
During network crises, the Lead is expected to act swiftly and decisively to mitigate disruptions and minimize downtime, thereby safeguarding the continuity of campus operations.
Furthermore, the Lead will maintain robust communication channels with other IT divisions, delivering comprehensive reports on network performance metrics and incident management, and will supervise the development and delivery of customer training programs to enhance user engagement and system proficiency.
The Network Field Services Lead will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission.
This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students.
This role will execute UCSF's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.
For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the company's computer network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work.
Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems.
They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols.
They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to oth er employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience / training in one or more of the following fields : computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
- 3 to 5+ years of expert experience working in one or more of the following fields : network services, information technology or network operations.
- Significant experience in the installation, configuration, monitoring, life cycle management, troubleshooting, and maintenance of a variety of network systems, parts and accessories.
Robust knowledge of the use in asset management software or systems.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate the installation, maintenance, and repair of network equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge about local, state, and federal regulations related to IT systems, privacy laws, safety standards, and service level agreement adherence.
- Significant knowledge of wired and wireless communications networks. Advanced knowledge of LAN / WAN, network systems, and technologies such as VLAN, DHCP, VoIP, Spanning Tree Protocol, fiber optics cabling / transceivers, and wireless.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex network issues.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate work assignments to small teams. Demonstrated experience presenting technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Experienced with project management and is able to delegate responsibility, track project progress, and manage daily work expectations.
Significant experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
Demonstrated experience delegating solutions when appropriate to the proper resources. Demonstrated understanding of how decisions affect teams.
Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
- In-Depth knowledge of monitoring cost-effectiveness and recommending improvement where needed from hardware, software and processes perspective.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to communicate with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in organization.
- Demonstrated ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others in sensitive situations, without damage to the relationship.
