About the Job
The Director of the Women's Center reports to the Associate Vice President for Institution Engagement and Education Justice of the Office for Equity and Diversity (OED) and works closely with the Office for Equity and Diversity Vice President.
The Director leads a team including an Assistant Director, Program Coordinator, graduate student interns, and undergraduate student staff to achieve the mission of the Women's Center, and has a key leadership role in advocacy and action toward eliminating barriers toward achievement and improving the campus climate for all women and gender-marginalized faculty, staff, students and alumni of the University of Minnesota.
This is a 100% time, 12-months annually renewable appointment in the academic administrative personnel series (job code 9341M2, Admin Manager 2).
Duties and Responsibilities :
Provide vision, direction, and support for the Women's Center
- Establish short and long-term strategic plans for WmC, in consultation with OED senior leaders and colleagues, in the areas of campus representation, inclusion, and action toward eliminating barriers toward achievement and improving the campus climate for all faculty, staff, and students with respect to gender equity, including recognizing and supporting gender equity and diversity as it intersects with race, ethnicity, religion, (dis)ability, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and other salient identities / lived experiences.
- Create, sustain, and continuously cultivate institutional, system, and community relationships and collaborations with the goal of enhancing intersectional gender equity initiatives.
- Review, develop and implement institutes, programs, and workshops to advance intersectional gender equity, leadership, and recognition for faculty, staff, and students.
Including, but not limited to :
o International Women's Day programming
o Indigenous Women and Women of Color Student Symposium
o Coordinating the Ada Comstock Distinguished Women Scholar Award Event
o Co-coordinating the Women's Leadership Institute for staff and faculty
- Provide on-going support, feedback, and direction for existing and developing programs and initiatives in WmC.
- Design and implement a robust evaluation and assessment plan for WmC programming and initiatives.
- Represent WmC / OED and serve as internal and external ambassador to women and gender-marginalized constituencies (i.e.
student, staff, and faculty affinity groups / spaces) on campus interests; advocate for policy creation / implementation and distribution of resources that support gender equity including, but not limited to, lactation access, bathroom access / parity, menstrual justice, pay equity, and parental / caregiver leave.
- Serve on University committees related to intersectional gender equity (e.g., Women's Faculty Cabinet, Lactation Advocacy Committee, Trans Action & Advisory Team) and as a member of the Leadership Team in the Office for Equity and Diversity.
- Lead initiatives to promote women's equity in higher education at the local, state and national level. Serve as a thought leader and sought-after resource on intersectional gender equity in higher education.
o Coordinate the regional Women's Resource and Action Centers (MN / WI) listserv.
o Present on issues related to gender equity in higher education at local, state and national conferences and events, and encourage staff to do the same.
o Actively participate in state, regional and national committees, boards and task forces with other women's and gender equity center leaders and colleagues.
- Advise UMN system campuses on issues related to women and intersectional gender equity, as needed.
- Participate as a member of OED's training team and collaborate with the OED Director of Education to assess, develop, implement, and evaluate the Center's
educational offerings for diverse audiences.
Lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of professional staff; provide supervision, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of staff members;
lead team-building efforts. Provide ongoing professional development for staff growth and success.
o Support the Assistant Director in the recruitment, hiring, and ongoing supervision of graduate student interns.
o Support the Program Coordinator in the recruitment, hiring and ongoing supervision of undergraduate student workers.
- Develop a detailed budget to support WmC strategic initiatives, in consultation with finance and budget colleagues.
- Partner with OED and Foundation colleagues to develop fundraising initiatives for scholarships and programs, and administer funds that support student scholarships / grants and faculty and staff awards / grants.
- Prepare briefs, reports, and talking points for senior leaders highlighting WmC's efforts in support of our campus.
- Partner with OED to develop and implement a strategic communication and outreach plan focused on campus and community members.
- Lead a collaborative effort to review options for changing / expanding the center's name to reflect our mission and values in engaging with constituents from a broad array of gender identities.
- Engage in work consistent with the mission of the Office for Equity and Diversity to create and sustain a campus environment that values and actively supports a pluralistic community.
WORK MODE : Hybrid with some days on campus and some remote
PAY RANGE : $89,000-$92,000
Qualifications
Required Qualifications :
- BA / BS in gender studies, public health, social work, education, or a related field with at least eight years of professional experience in an academic or community setting, including a minimum of 5 years combined in one or more of the following areas : working on issues related to women and gender marginalized communities, higher education administration, student affairs and / or with young adults, or in an equity and / or diversity unit or a Master's degree and 6 years of professional experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of gender equity and women's issues, dynamics of oppression, and social justice / change.
- Demonstrated experience in, and an ongoing commitment to, working effectively with and across diverse communities, including and not limited to :
- American Indians / Native Americans and Indigenous people; people of color, including underrepresented groups and new immigrant populations;
- people with both visible and invisible disabilities; people across faiths, religions, spiritualities, and those who are agnostic and atheists;
women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions; first generation students / professionals and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Demonstrated success in developing, coordinating, and presenting programs that address intersectional gender equity.
- Demonstrated experience in assessing and evaluating programs and / or services.
- Experience supervising and mentoring staff, students, and / or volunteers.
- Strong leadership skills, ability to work independently and contribute to an intentional social justice-working environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with different constituency groups, i.
e. faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree in Higher Education or related field
- Five years of full-time experience working in a college or university academic setting
- Teaching, presenting, and / or facilitating in a higher education environment
