PRIMARY FUNCTION : Under general the direct supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police, the Training Lieutenant performs a variety of complex, technical and administrative duties in support of the Police Department and its training function.

REPORTS TO : Deputy Chief of Campus Police

SALARY SCHEDULE : A-5

WORK DAYS : 250

REQUIREMENTS :

Education Level : Bachelor Degree in a related field.

Preferred : Bachelor Degree in criminal justice administration.

  • Experience, Skill, and Certification :
  • Certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) as a police officer
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience in law enforcement environment or related field
  • School Resource Officer Certification within 12 months
  • Assignments must have included public and community relations.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to crime, safety, and security
  • The ability to interpret and explain laws, rules, policies, and procedures, and to apply them appropriately
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills
  • Strong interpersonal / communication skills
  • Knowledge of training / teaching techniques for law enforcement personnel
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, as well as public relations skills
  • Knowledge of Board policies and procedures
  • Eligible for Georgia Professional Standards Support Certificate
  • General Instructor Training Certificate (GA POST)
  • Firearms Instructor Training Certificate (GA POST)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Models and ensures appropriate workplace behavior that reflects the values of Savannah Chatham County Public School System and the Board of Education Police Department;
  • Represents program goals, objectives and needs before local, state and federal agencies, community groups and the public.
  • Promotes and ensures proper employee training and compliance with BOE school safety program and department safety procedures.
  • Coordinates, schedule, and supervises annual Sworn / Civilian training and staff development activities.
  • Schedule special instructor guest speakers; review and approve training material prior to schedule.
  • Assuring completion of annual 20 hours mandated training / firearms requalification for all sworn personnel.
  • Submit training waivers and / or any pertinent information pertaining to officer training records.
  • Oversees the maintenance of all departmental training records.
  • Assist in the administration of the certification program for the department and participate with policy / uniform committee etc.
  • Keeps abreast of the law and all applicable changes in departmental rules, local, state and federal laws and regulations that affect police operations and the civil rights of the public, state law for district administrators and department staff.

Develops and recommends new and revised policies and methods related to Campus Police operations.

  • Responsible for recruitment and retention.
  • Manages the District’s training program and instructors.
  • Oversees the Student Police Academy program.
  • Coordinates the department’s Special Reaction Team and its training / development.
  • Assists with the development of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Chairs the department’s Use of Force Review Board.
  • Assist with special events, security evaluations, development of security enhancements, and etc.
  • Must keep abreast and train sworn / civilian staff members on any and all Georgia laws and / or professional standards pertaining to School Resource Officers, Students, and School Personnel
  • Must be compliant with BOE standard operating procedures.
  • GA POST Training Records Submissions : Keep current student record information, Class Roster / Attendance, C-11 submissions, and personnel actions resignation, termination, retirement etc.
  • Develop specialty training modules for K9, Communication Officers, First Aid / CPR, Verbal Judo, Interpersonal Communications Skills, Customer Service etc.
  • Assist with BOE specialty sponsored training courses Mindset, De-escalation training, security screening, and etc.
  • Assist with PowerDMS and the uploading of all training materials, PowerPoints, and other pertinent documents.
  • Coordinates the Field Training Officer (FTO) development and its management.
  • Inspect and document annual weapons, ballistic vest, and police accessories.
  • Manage inventory for all firearms, ammunition, rifles etc.
  • Responsible for ordering all materials needed for the range or other specialized activities.
  • Assist in screening, hiring, assigning, and evaluating department staff.
  • Interprets district policy and state law for district administrators and department staff and public.
  • May be required to be on twenty-four-hour call and / or regularly work on various shifts, weekends, and / or holidays as deemed necessary.
  • Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Incumbents will receive an annual contract. The work calendar will be 250 days. Salary will be determined based on level of certification and allowable experience. Exempt
