Job Description
The Respiratory Therapy Student Extern, under the direct supervision of a Respiratory Therapist, performs a variety of tasks and procedures in accordance with completed competencies and unit needs.
Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities to enhance practice knowledge base related to respiratory therapy and the respiratory process which they have learned in class and practiced in the school setting.
Assists the healthcare team in implementing the plan of care and achieving desired patient and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration.

Job Responsibilities
- Provides assistance in maintaining supplies and equipment available to ensure efficient operations. Collects equipment from all the areas of the hospital and cleans and reassembles equipment according to proper procedure observing standard precautions.
- Performs pre-use checks on all ventilator types to ensure proper equipment function and preparation for use.
- May participate in Quality Improvement Processes for the department; Relates how processes that are being tracked to enhanced care given at the bedside;
Takes an active role in developing new ideas for process improvement and assists other personnel in data collection and interpretation.
- Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively.
- Provides designated direct and indirect patient care activities.
- Monitors, promotes, and maintains an environment that facilitates safe and effective patient care and reports any changes to the RT.
- Assists in the setup, maintenance, and cleaning of respiratory equipment and devices. Ensures that all equipment is in proper working condition and readily available for use.
- Assumes responsibility and takes initiative to expand knowledge and skills related to respiratory therapy; Collaborates effectively with the respiratory therapy team and other healthcare professionals.
- Manages the storage and distribution of oxygen to ensure a continuous and safe supply to patients; Monitors and maintains oxygen equipment and storage areas.
- Reports identified unusual patient conditions / reaction to immediate supervisor.
- Performs Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation after Basic Life Support Certification.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Must be actively enrolled and in good standing in an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program
