Columbia Engineering currently has an opening for a Survey Technician located in our Duluth office. This position will assist the Crew Chief in performing surveys, construction staking, and other land surveying duties.
The successful candidate must be able to work in a team environment as a key member of a survey crew. The position has the opportunity for advancement for motivated individuals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in all aspects of surveying including, but not limited to, boundary and topographical surveys and construction staking services.
- Load / Unload survey equipment to / from the survey vehicle on a daily basis.
- Keep survey vehicle maintained as well as stocked with traverse nails, flagging and stakes as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements : Minimum Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Entry Level - No experience required
Must be able to travel overnight and for extended duration.
- Current driver’s license, good driving record required.
- Successful completion of a post offer background check and drug screening is required.
Physical Requirements
- Must be physically mobile in an outdoor environment with the ability to work in variable climate conditions including extreme cold and heat and in locations with all types of terrain as well as the ability to walk long distances.
- Ability to carry survey instruments and equipment in remote locations is required. Including carrying robot; all instruments;
tripods and other necessary equipment (stake bag, iron pins, etc.) weighing as much as 60 lbs. May have to carry half of a boat (full weight approximately 110 lbs).
The ability to exert physical effort including, but not limited to, lifting, carrying, pushing and / or pulling, of objects and materials of weight (generally 60 lbs and less) Field work may require strenuous activities and unwieldy situations such as clearing and moving tree limbs or loading a boat overhead onto a survey vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge in the use of Total Stations, robotic instruments, GPS equipment, and data collection.
- Computer knowledge / experience with Microsoft Office (Word / Excel)
