The Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies at the University of Iowa invites applications for an academic year open rank clinical-track faculty position in the Educational Leadership program.

The position will begin on August 20, 2025.

Description

The University of Iowa is looking for an individual to help us in our mission to have a great leader in every Iowa school.

We seek an experienced K12 educational leader who is committed to excellence in leadership, with the ability to prepare future school leaders to work in a range of school settings.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the educational disparities impacting students and families in Iowa and the reasons those disparities exist and perpetuate.

This person must also show a commitment to work collaboratively to make positive change for all students in Iowa schools.

The Dean and program faculty are dedicated to developing innovative principal licensure and superintendent certification programs that build on our legacy of developing highly effective principals and superintendents who will be vigorous education leaders for the 21

century. We are committed to preparing leaders who inspire teachers and make it their mission to provide their students with the very best preparation for their futures.

Clinical-track faculty are typically allocated 80% teaching / field supervision and 20% service. A clinical faculty member must provide evidence of excellence in teaching, supervision, and curricular planning.

Clinical-track faculty are eligible for promotion to full clinical professor and may have continuous multiple year appointments.

The Educational Leadership Program offers four degrees.

  • M.A. (designed for principal licensure)
  • Ed.S. (designed for superintendent certification)
  • Ph.D. (research-focused doctorate)
  • Ed.D. (practice-focused doctorate)

Education Requirement

By June 2025, prospective candidates must have earned an Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field for appointment at the rank of clinical instructor.

Required Qualifications

  • Successful leadership experience at the building, district, or AEA level in Iowa.
  • Evidence of experience with continuous school improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a widely varied constituency.
  • Teaching experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Evidence of active participation in state-level educational organizations.
  • Experience teaching in higher education.
  • Experience developing relationships with schools.
  • Experience designing and presenting training seminars.
  • Experience with recruitment and mentoring of prospective school leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and foster an academic environment inclusive of culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically different populations.

Responsibilities

This position will serve as an instructor and advisor in the Principal (M.A.), Superintendent Preparation (Ed.S.), and Doctorate (Ed.

D. and Ph.D.) programs. The successful candidate will also coordinate field experiences for the Educational Leadership Program.

In addition to teaching assignments of clinical courses in both program areas, the following responsibilities may be required :

  • Develop and implement a recruitment plan for prospective students entering the Educational Leadership Programs.
  • Oversee admissions.
  • Recruit adjunct faculty.
  • Create, coordinate, and oversee training, development, and supervision of adjunct faculty.
  • Recruit field supervisors for the clinical field experiences.
  • Hold ongoing seminars for field supervisors and adjunct faculty for training, development, and supervision.

The Educational Leadership program is committed to preparing educators to be exceptional school leaders, professors, and policymakers and offers degrees and licensure for PK-12 school leadership.

Most students in the program are practicing teachers and administrators, and the majority of classes are offered in the evenings during the regular academic year.

Additionally, most classes are offered via interactive distance education. Our courses are taught by a combination of faculty, who will share cutting-edge theory and research, and practitioners, who are working professionals with exemplary leadership experience.

These are recognized and award-winning educational leaders from across the state who work in both urban and rural school districts.

About the Department

The Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies (EPLS) at the University of Iowa includes 16 faculty members and serves over 150 students.

The department has two emphasis areas : Educational Leadership and Higher Education and Student Affairs. EPLS has an international reputation for advancements in the areas of evaluation and assessment, educational measurement, and effective undergraduate education, among many other research initiatives.

In addition to supporting impactful research, EPLS values and uplifts the work of its faculty practitioners, leaning into the crucial intersection of scholarship and practice in instruction, program planning, and student support.
