Job Description

The Chesapeake City Attorney’s Office is seeking a second- or third-year law student for a paid internship during the fall academic semester.

The internship offers a tremendous opportunity to work directly with the City Attorney and other attorneys and professional staff in the department.

Assignments may include drafting motions, pleadings, briefs, and other court filings; preparing amendments to the City Code and Zoning Ordinance;

legal research and drafting memoranda for attorneys and other city departments; reviewing contracts, easements, and other legal documents.

The internship will offer ample opportunities to observe and potentially participate in court hearings and trials, as well as interviews with clients and witnesses.

If interested, there will be opportunities to attend meetings of city boards and commissions, including City Council.As legal counsel to the City, the City Attorney’s Office works in many different types of law, including land use, litigation, real estate, contracts, civil and criminal code enforcement, human services, eminent domain, constitutional issues including first amendment questions, environmental issues, and employment law.

The office also provides abundant opportunities for mentoring and direct feedback on assignments, can help match assignments to the intern’s interest, and help them discover new and interesting areas of law.

This opportunity requires a commitment of at least 10 hours but no more than 20 hours per week, at $16.56 per hour (non-negotiable), with a maximum of 240 total hours between Monday August 19, 2024 (the earliest start date) and ending on November 29, 2024.

The approved work schedule can be flexible to accommodate class schedules; however, the final schedule must be approved by the City Attorney and the selected intern will be expected to work on-site during work hours and be on-site a minimum of two days per week.
