About Our Location
Marlborough, MA is a small industrial city in central Massachusetts, surrounded by
historic Massachusetts towns and within day-trip distance of the Berkshires,
White Mountains and Cape Cod. For those who prefer a more urban lifestyle, we are
located directly off I-495 within easy commuting distance of Boston and Cambridge (30-
40 minutes), Worcester (25 minutes), Nashua, NH (45 minutes) and Providence, RI (50
minutes).

Role Description
XL Batteries is developing a next generation flow battery for grid-scale energy storage.
We seek creative, forward-thinking people to improve our existing battery and stack
designs. The Battery Designer will work with others to design and document our battery
and stack architecture. Experience with Solidworks solid models and drawings is
required. An understanding of flow battery or fuel cell design and operation is preferred.
Applicants must show the ability to quickly and efficiently design and document iterations
during development of prototypes. Candidate must have knowledge of geometric
dimensioning and tolerancing and familiarity with manufacturing methods used to
manufacture and inspect build to print parts including machining, injection molding, diecutting, waterjet cutting, laser cutting, welding, rapid prototyping etc. Familiarity with
quality control process is also desirable. Candidate will also maintain upper-level system
models for both prototype and product intent designs.
Responsibilities
- Meet with cross functional development team to review design details and provide updateson status of projects.
- Create and maintain models of battery stack and system.
- Create and maintain drawings for build to print items for stack and system components.
- Work with team to develop product life cycle management system.
- Interface with vendors to share models and drawings and request quotes for build to print parts.
- Explore alternative manufacturing methods and request quotes for comparative cost analysis.
- Manage waste streams and dispose of hazardous waste appropriately.
Requirements
- Associates degree in computer aided design.
- At least 2 years in an applied battery, fuel cell, or similar development environment.
- Understanding of electrochemistry and electrochemical / mechanical engineering.
- Experience with flow batteries, fuel cells, or similar electro mechanical systems preferred.
- Highly motivated and self-driven individual with the ability to work independently and multi-task.
- A maker's mindset : comfortable bringing ideas quickly from concept to solid models and drawings.
- Comfortable with DFMEA.
- Strong written and oral communication skills required.
- Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
- This is a contract, hybrid workplace position.
