ESL INSTRUCTOR (PART TIME)

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY :

Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching ESL courses to students enrolled in Kirkwood's Secondary Programs.

Instruction will take place in Cedar Rapids, though there might be opportunities to teach in Coralville or online if there are also openings at those locations.

At times there might be travel to other Kirkwood locations for meetings. Classes are held Monday through Thursday. The session dates include : Oct.

28 to Dec. 19., Jan. 21 to March 6, March 24 to May 8, May 12 to June 5. Morning classes are held from 9 : 00 AM to 11 : 00 AM or 11 : 15 AM 1 : 15 PM.

Evening classes are 5 : 30 PM to 7 : 30 PM. Currently there is 1 opening for a Low Beginning evening class (5 : 30-7 : 30PM).

This will be a new class offering starting on October 28. The total hours per week for one class equates to 10 hours, with extra hours being available for team meetings, special projects, and professional development.

This position is for Iowa residents only.

  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.
  • Provide contextualized, scaffolder, interactive instruction that includes cooperative learning tasks and implements ESL college and career readiness and CASAS ESL standards.
  • Track attendance daily and submit reports.
  • Respond in a timely matter to communications and requests from program director and coordinator.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and ongoing professional development opportunities.

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work.

Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS :

  • Prior experience teaching adult ESL / ABE learners or working with adult immigrants
  • Prior experience teaching ESL or foreign language at any age
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in TESOL, Education, Foreign Language Teaching or related field
  • TESOL training / certification preferred, such as K-12 certification in ESL, bachelors or graduate studies in TESOL, TEFL certification or completion of MN Literacy Council pre-service training courses for adult ESL educators (http : / / online.themlc.org / ).
