The new Clemson University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position to lead the development and implementation of the DVM Professional Development curriculum.

The primary responsibilities of this position are focused on teaching and service with substantial opportunities for research and scholarship if desired.

Academic rank would be commensurate with experience.

The Professional Development Lead will play a vital role in developing and delivering the curriculum for the next generation of veterinarians for the state of South Carolina.

The Professional Development unit will be taught across the first 3 years of the program and is designed to provide Clemson DVM students with the knowledge and skills necessary to be competent and confident in the domains of leadership, wellness, collaboration and accessibility, ethics, communication, financial literacy, and scholarship.

Working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and external stakeholders, the individual in this position will be responsible for guiding faculty in the creation, integration, organization, implementation, and evaluation of courses in the Professional Development unit.

This faculty member will work closely with the unit leads for Foundational Science and Clinical Skills, ensuring students achieve proficiency in all necessary competencies before progressing to the partially distributive clinical year of the curriculum.

Overview of Clemson and the CVM

Located in South Carolina's beautiful and fast-growing upstate, Clemson University is the land-grant university of South Carolina and ranks among the country's top 50 national public universities in the U.

The CVM is currently seeking accreditation by the American Veterinary Medicine Association to offer the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to approximately 80 students per cohort starting in 2026 (pending approval).

The CVM plans to utilize a partial distributive model of education for students' fourth year clinical experience. Its brand-new state of the art main campus will reside in Pendleton, SC, near the T.

Ed Garrison Arena, will house research and teaching labs, and utilize both ambulatory services as well as teaching sites at the Clemson University Equine Center, Lamaster Dairy Cattle Center, and other locations for education in the field.

Overview of the Position

Reporting to the Department Chair and working closely with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, the Professional Development Lead will :

  • Create and deliver the professional development unit curriculum.
  • Develop assessment strategies in alignment with the overall competency-based curriculum.
  • Collaborate with other unit leads to ensure integration of knowledge and skills between courses and across years.
  • Organize and train faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to deliver content and provide assessments.
  • Collaborate with the Academic Affairs Office to ensure alignment of content with extracurricular activities and programming (i.e. orientation).
  • Oversee the management and collection of data essential for academic planning, program assessment, and program improvement.
  • Lead the delivery of communication simulations throughout the curriculum.
  • Coordinate and oversee the communication simulation coordinator and the simulated clients.
  • Aid in procurement of state-of-the-art teaching equipment for the communication simulation labs.
  • Lead research and scholarship initiatives designed to improve professional development outcomes in students.
  • Develop ongoing understanding of the skills needed in the veterinary profession through participation in local, regional, and national continuing education and committees.
  • Serve on CVM committees as assigned.

Additionally, the Professional Development Lead must have the ability to :

  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, possess exemplary verbal and written communication skills, with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and function independently with limited supervision and guidance.
  • Work in partnership with faculty and staff across multiple disciplines and functions across the college and university.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the core values of Clemson University and specifically to community, engagement, belonging and accessibility (CEBA) .

Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent
  • 3-plus years of experience in education

Preferred qualifications :

  • Additional experience in professional development education
  • Training or advanced degrees in the aforementioned domains (i.e. MEd, MBA, MSW Veterinary Communication training)
