ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS(ELL) PARAEDUCATOR - BILINGUAL (TRAVELING)

LOCATION : Columbia Valley Elementary School

REPORTS TO : ELL Director / Principal

DEPARTMENT : ELL

Bilingual - Spanish Speaking Preferred

Hours / Work Times

6 Hours Per Day (To be determined)

190 Days Per Year (180 student days / 10 holidays)

This position will remain open until a qualified applicant is selected. The earliest date a recommendation for hire may be submitted is after 09 / 09 / 24.

Must meet Paraeducator Employment Requirements as follows* :

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent; AND
  • Must meet one or more of the following :
  • Have received a passing score of 455 or higher on the Education Testing Service ParaPro Assessment (ETS test / PRAXIS); or
  • Hold an Associate Degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or
  • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university; or
  • Have completed a Paraeducator Apprenticeship Program (program must be registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council).
  • If you do not meet the required qualifications listed above, your name will be screened out from the list of qualified candidates .

Upon hire, new paraeducators will be required to complete state required training offered through Evergreen School District.

SUMMARY STATEMENT :

Under the supervision of the classroom instructor and the building Principal, the ELL Paraeducator will assist in the supervision of instructional activities, working closely with students on an individual as well as a small group basis on English language acquisition and basic skills.

Specialty Language Preferred - speaking Paraeducators will perform additional duties as specified under "Other Responsibilities".

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Assist the program instructor in supervising and working with students as follows :
  • Assist in providing one-to-one and group instruction to students so as to meet course outcomes.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a learning environment as specified by course goals and curriculum outcomes.
  • Assist in evaluating and specifying direction of instruction so as to maximize each student's potential.
  • Record and maintain accurate data on student progress.
  • Assist in administering and scoring formal and informal tests.
  • Assist in implementing behavioral management strategies using the same emphasis and techniques as set forth by the teacher.
  • Assist in organizing and preparing instructional materials on the typewriter and / or computer.
  • Assist interpreters in conferencing with parents and students.
  • May travel from location to location to assist students in the program.
  • Attend meetings and inservice training throughout the school year.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the overall operation of the ELL program.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • A specialty language preferred speaking assistant will :
  • Provide academic primary language support for students who have a specialty language.
  • Assist in communication with specialty language speaking parents and students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT NECESSARY :

Computer / Laptop, typewriter, telephone, copy machines, and all other tools and equipment necessary to perform the essential functions as listed above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Test on basic skills required. The successful candidate may qualify for a pay rate in the pro / tech category only if the specialty language is required and all other criteria is met).

  • Basic typing / keyboarding skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Previous experience working with students in academic areas preferred.
  • Must possess personal characteristics of flexibility, initiative, cooperativeness, and confidentiality.
  • Ability or willingness to learn the computer.
  • Demonstrated ability to use the various office equipment as outlined in the tools and equipment area above.
  • Previous experience working with individuals from other cultures preferred.
  • Bilingual skills desirable.
  • Must have a good command of the English language.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competencies in reading, writing, and math.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in preferred language as evidenced by an oral and written evaluation in the preferred language.
  • Must be able to travel from location to location to assist students in the program.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others as part of a team.
