GENERAL SUMMARY :
Under minimal supervision, prepares and leads all levels of exercise classes designed to improve cardiovascular endurance, develop and improve muscle tone and improve the ability to perform activities of daily living.
In doing so, designs the class routines, selects appropriate music, instructs participants in proper form and techniques, and modifies class intensity and / or routine in order to address the needs of the healthy and / or special population participants.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except those that begin with the word "May.")
1. Designs exercise routines to follow designated formats to ensure a safe body workout or focus on particular body component(s) as appropriate.
1.1 Gathers and organizes music selections for classes and ensures appropriate rhythms and beats
per minute for class components such as warm-ups, cardiovascular, resistance training and
cool-downs and the like.
1.2 Assists in the development, planning, marketing and successful implementation of classes,
programs and events for the group exercise program.
1.3 Monitors participants’ condition and / or skill in order to assess intensity levels and / or teaching
progression of land and water classes. Modifies pace and / or exercise routine to maintain
appropriate intensity level.
1.4 Maintains positive service relationships with participants and answers questions and
determines needs regarding exercise class.
1.5 Remains abreast of new techniques, routines, theory, information, etc. in exercise class
instruction and applies this information into classes.
2. May lead workshops regarding exercise technique, application and theory for other internal / external instructors.
3. Participates in the following minimum hours of continuing education related to instructors specific areas of expertise as listed below or requirements needed to maintain ACE certification or the equivalent or other requirements established by direct supervisor.
3.1 Attends 10 hours of external continuing education / workshops.
3.2 Attends 5 hours of internal conditioning education / workshops / in-services.
3.3 Participates in 4 internal EHFC scheduled group exercise classes.
4. Participates in at least 2 EHFC sponsored events and at least 4 special events per year.
5. Attends all EHFC and department staff meetings and trainings. Acquires and maintains knowledge of all programming offered by the department.
6. Responsible for covering or finding an appropriate substitute for all assigned classes. Substitutes for fellow team members a minimum of 6 times per year.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
Requires a minimum of 2 years of high school level of education or higher. Applicant should be eligible for certification as a Group Exercise Instructor;
Aerobic Instructor; Aquatic Instructor; Special Population Instructor; or Children’s Instructor by a nationally recognized accrediting body or acknowledged by EHFC or possess a minimum of 100 hours of previous group instructional experience of the past year.
Current CPR Certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross required within 90 days of employment.
Aquatic Instructors must obtain ACE or AEA certification within first 6 month of employment. Aerobic Instructors must obtain ACE certification within first 6 months of employment.
Special Population Instructors must obtain certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body acknowledged by EHFC or complete an in-house training program within first 5 months of employment.
3. Some analytical ability is required. Work is performed in accordance with standard procedures, but does require basic technical knowledge or in-depth experience-based knowledge in order to analyze and interpret information.
4. A significant level of communication skills is required in order to teach classes and motivate participants to exercise.
5. Work is performed in accordance with instructions and procedures but incumbents must organize the work, set priorities, and request occasional exceptions when necessary.
6. Work requires the ability to continuously do cardiovascular exercise and / or resistance exercise for an hour or more at a time and / or lift or carry objects weighing 5-20 pounds.
7. Work conditions include working in an area that is somewhat unpleasant due to drafts, noise, temperature variation or the like, working with equipment or performing activities where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle strains.
