The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Assistant Director for Research and Teaching, Cyberinfrastructure, Office of Information Technology R0142727 .

ROLE of the POSITION

This exciting new role reports directly to the Vice President for Digital Transformation and Chief Information Officer (VPDT / CIO) as part of a groundbreaking collaboration that brings supportive cyberinfrastructure services to researchers.

This position plays a key role in helping faculty and student researchers in all disciplines accelerate research and transform learning experiences through supportive use of cyberinfrastructure.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable directly engaging faculty, researchers, technical staff, and leadership to coordinate VPDT / CIO strategies.

Applicants should bring a commitment to scholarship and prior participation in funded research activities that they will use to inform the university research support expansion.

This role will help prepare UNLV for the elevated importance and the rapid growth of computational and data-facing technologies in research and teaching.

The Assistant Director of Research and Teaching Cyberinfrastructure (ADRTC) will facilitate planning and implementation of the expansion of research-facing technologies at institutional scale, representing UNLV interests in collaborative research technology endeavors at regional and national scales, including the scoping and development of funding proposals for state and national solicitations and expanding capacity for both UNLV and Nevada’s higher-education capabilities.

This 12-month 1.0 FTE administrative position within the university’s central IT organization, is also part of a research support expansion associated with the NSF-EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement grant to Nevada.

As part of the NSF-EPSCoR team, the ADRTC will contribute to building supportive state and regional partnerships that last beyond current projects.

The ADRTC will employ their research expertise to guide a team of matrix technical subject-matter experts in applying their enterprise infrastructure skills to fulfill the computational and data intensive requirements of researchers.

Successfully guiding these technical pioneers in fulfilling the requirements of the NSF-EPSCoR project will be a key deliverable in the first three years.

Applying the lessons from this practical proof-of-concept to future institutional investments, the ADRTC will create a sustainable collaborative IT research support program with regional and national ties.

MINIMUM & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum

This position requires a Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and / or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

Experience working in a higher education or research-intensive setting including demonstrated success in working with a research team supported by federal and / or regional research grants.

Preferred

Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a closely related field.

Demonstrated success in the areas of research computing, data, and cyberinfrastructure within an academic setting.

KNOWLEDGE

Required

Understanding at least one and familiarity with two or more additional technologies listed (data structures related to research, data management plans, network technologies, data-facing scientific instruments, storage systems, data workflows, high-performance data staging and transfer systems, identity and access management, software utilized in research and cloud technologies)

Foundation of cyberinfrastructure components sufficient to understand, seek clarification on the recommendations of technical experts in a variety of disciplines

Deep understanding of and commitment to UNLV top tier 2.0 mission and values

Preferred

Knowledge of UNLV, NSHE, and State of Nevada workforce development areas of opportunity

Familiarity with grant solicitation and submission requirements for one or more federal agencies

SKILLS

Required

A record of working as part of a research team, teaching, and service

Serving on university committees, participating in governance activities, and or contributing to professional organizations within academic discipline as appropriate for a faculty member, or other academic professional

Contribute to the broader academic and professional community by participating in conferences, workshops, and other events related to computing, data, and cyberinfrastructure

Mentoring and or advising students, postdoctoral researchers, or junior faculty in their academic and professional development

Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in research, teaching, or service

Preferred

Demonstrated leadership in the areas of computing, data, and cyberinfrastructure within an academic or research-intensive setting

ABILITIES

Required

Ability to effectively communicate strategic data technology platform decisions in support of key research and science-based service missions and initiatives across the University and NSHE institutions based on information provided by technical experts

Ability to learn and communicate the salient aspects of complex and novel data system designs and architectures to peers in the University as well as scientific and engineering personnel

Ability to implement strategies that enhance the university's cyberinfrastructure and improve its competitiveness for federal and regional grants

Seek and secure federal and regional grants to support the expansion of the university's cyberinfrastructure, ensuring the campus remains at the forefront of technological advancements

Ability to effectively lead, supervise, manage, and / or delegate to other staff whose subject matter expertise and technical areas of focus may not closely align with the ADRTC’s own strengths and experience

Preferred

Demonstrated success as PI or Co-PI on federal and / or regional grants that include cyberinfrastructure or data intensive components

Demonstrated success contributing to federal and / or regional grants to support research and cyberinfrastructure development
