Overview :
At J.P. Thomas & Co., Inc, the payroll accountant is a blended role that consists of being responsible for all aspects of payroll processing in addition to performing a range of accounts payable tasks.
The payroll accountant must be detail oriented and have both strong time management and excellent communication skills.
Responsibilities :
- Performs all activities necessary to process weekly payrolls, including filing tax reports, processing levies and garnishments, reviewing ADP Workforce Now integration data for accuracy, preparing payroll transactions, and preparing special reports.
- Prepares and processes payroll via ADP Workforce NOW. Responsible for payroll review and coordination of any necessary research or contact with ADP.
- Monitors submissions of approved timesheet data.
- Resolving payroll discrepancies, answering questions, and responding to requests for payroll information.
- Working with ADP to process all required payroll tax amendments as required.
- Effectively and professionally communicates payroll-related matters to all levels of staff and management, including the Thomas Officers.
- Ensure company payroll matters are anticipated and addressed in a proactive fashion.
- Perform compliance checks on payroll-related matters (against both legal and company policy requirements) and reporting violations
- Troubleshooting of Direct Deposit Banking Issues / ACH Rejects.
- Review and reconcile company payroll invoices and deductions for accuracy.
- Ensure the accuracy, validity, and timeliness of all payroll-related tax filings and tax issuances (such as the annual W-2s).
- Ensure proper quarterly state and earning by state reporting.
- Collaborate with team and provide back up for Accounts Payable entry.
- Process weekly AP payments with interface to bank.
- Reconciliation of AP account to the general ledger.
- Maintains the integrity and accuracy of invoice coding.
- Issues checks from departmental accounts.
- Researches and responds to all AP inquiries in a prompt manner.
- Provide necessary support to accounting and human resources.

Eligibility Qualifications
- 3+ years’ work experience in payroll / accounting role.
- ADP Workforce Now Payroll and or Sage expertise preferred.
- Intermediate Excel Skills Required including manipulation of pivot tables, VLOOKUP’s, and formulas.
- Experience with tax withholding familiarity and garnishment processes and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills and keen attention to details.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Strong discretion in dealing with highly confidential and sensitive information always exhibited.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Ability to interact well within a team environment.
