Occupational Summary
Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring the pool area and all swimmers to ensure the safety of all participants, perform rescue operations as needed, and make sure the pool and pool area are clean and safe for use.
Duke Recreation and Physical Education is seeking individuals to become a part of our Recreation Center Aquatics Team. We are seeking employees who can commit up to 19.9 hours per week.

Work Performed
- Perform patron surveillance.
- Always ensure safety in and around the pool areas.
- Rescue swimmers who need assistance.
- Render first aid and CPR as necessary.
- Maintain appropriate certifications.
- Recognize hazardous conditions and take precautionary measures.
- Proactively enforce all pool rules and regulations.
- Maintain the pool areas and ensure that they are always kept clean and safe.
- Check and record pool chemicals as scheduled.
- Maintain ongoing record books for pool usage as scheduled.
- Create a warm and welcoming environment for all pool users.
- Attend all mandatory training or staff meetings as scheduled.
- Understand safety and emergency preparedness procedures for the Aquatics Center.
- Complete all required reports in a timely, professional manner.
- Perform additional duties as needed.
- Support and help progress the university and department’s commitment to anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education / Training
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification or equivalent.
- Current American Red Cross CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent.
Experience

Skills
- Strong swimming background.
- Ability to perform in-water saves, including submerged rescues in 17 feet of water.
- Ability to interact with diverse groups through a variety of situations.
- Ability to use independent judgment when needed.
General
Must be able to accommodate a variable work schedule that may include early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
