SUMMARY

To work with youth to facilitate their educational, social, and personal development and support youth who are not in the physical custody of parents or guardian for a variety of reasons.

Key Provisions

The term "unaccompanied youth" includes youth in homeless situations who are not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Help unaccompanied youth choose and enroll in a school, after considering the youth's wishes.
  • Inform unaccompanied youth of their rights to transportation and assisting youth in accessing
  • Provide unaccompanied youth. notice of their right to appeal school or school district decisions and ensuring that youth are immediately enrolled in school pending resolution of
  • Address problems caused by enrollment delays due to guardianship issues.
  • Describe how homeless youth and those separated from the public schools are identified and afforded equal access to appropriate secondary education and support services.
  • Monitor academic progress and assist youth in making basic educational
  • Provide unaccompanied youth the opportunity to enroll in diversified learning opportunities such as vocational education, credit for work programs and flexible school hours, yet ensure that they are integrated with the mainstream school environment, including extracurricular activities as much as possible.
  • Maintain a listing of available surrogate parents to assist unaccompanied youth with their special

needs.

  • Develop strategies to continue educating students who have been suspended or expelled.
  • Contact relevant social services agencies and gather information, pamphlets, and applications

concerning valuable services such as food stamps and make materials available to those identified as unaccompanied youth.

Meet with and coordinate with relevant social service and medical agencies to develop policies and

maintain copies of reports and attendance records.

  • Develop a list of referrals that includes shelters, youth hotlines, and other service providers.
  • Report data on numbers of unaccompanied youth.
  • Ensure all cases, records and files are maintained in a proper manner and are in accordance with confidentiality for state and federal policies.
  • Provide crisis stabilization, assess youth needs, and verbally de-escalate youth.
  • Serve as an advocate, mentor, coach and role model for youth.
  • Assist with ACT prep, financial aid, identifying scholarships, and college applications.

QUALIFIC A TIONS

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

Masters or Bachelor's Degree in human service, health science or related field including psychology from an accredited university / college with experience working with children or, a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from an accredited university / college with at least 5 years experience working with at risk and homeless children.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, presentations, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, administrators, and the general public.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of assigned personnel. Ability to work tactfully and harmoniously with schools, staff, agencies, parents and the public.
